Our Symbol
The Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System FMOLHS is an organization driven daily by its spiritbased mission of compassionate care With this in mind the logo used by FMOLHS Our Lady of the Lake and many of the companies organized under the Health System is designed with a depth of symbolism not often found in corporate logos

Central to the symbol shown here is its figurative aspect composed of the Tau form and element above it This symbol encourages multiple interpretations Christian cross Jesus St Francis or a Franciscan Sister At the same time the logos stark simplicity underscores pure Franciscan idealsopen and accepting humble and vulnerable The symmetry and ideal proportions suggest our constant pursuit of spiritual completenessbut a slightly incomplete circle reminds us that we cannot achieve earthly perfection

In addition the four quadrants of the logo made by the circles segments represent four of the Health Systems five core values reverence and love for all of life joyfulness of spirit humility and justice with the figure in the middle symbolic of the fifth service

History

Our History
Our Lady of the Lakes story began in 1911 when Mother de Bethanie Crowley and five Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady made an historic voyage to America to further their Orders mission of serving the sick and needy In 1921 eight years after establishing a hospital in Monroe La Mother de Bethanie was invited to Baton Rouge by Monsignor Francis Leon Gassler of St Josephs Cathedral and a group of leading local physicians Her task to tour the downtown area in search of a suitable location for a hospital to serve the 22000 residents of the small river town

In choosing a site on which to carry out her mission Mother de Bethanie insisted on an unlikely briar patch across University Lake from the original Louisiana State University campus On Nov 4 1923 her vision found reality in a beautiful fourstory brick structure as Our Lady of the Lake Sanitarium opened its doors to the city For nearly 55 years Our Lady of the Lake provided comfort and peace of mind to residents of Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas As the hospitals services grew so did its reputation as a caring healing facility marked by medical excellence

On April 2 1978 the original hospital was closed and a 460bed stateoftheart facility on Essen Lane opened to better serve a population that had grown to the south and east of the original location

Today Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center is the dominant institution in health care in the Greater Baton Rouge area It is also the largest private medical center in Louisiana with 763 licensed beds In a given year Our Lady of the Lake treats approximately 25000 patients in the hospital and services about 350000 persons through outpatient locations It has a complement of almost 900 physicians and 3000 staff members The Lake also operates two nursing homes has an affiliated cancer facility adjacent to the main hospital and operates a number of outpatient services on its campus as well as in outlying locations
