Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital is a fully accredited 18bed facility Together with the Red Lake Medical Associates and Red Lake Family Health Team we offer emergency acute care complex continuing care and diagnostic services to approximately 5000 residents in Red Lake Balmertown Cochenour Ear Falls and surrounding communities

The Hospital also sponsors other programs including Community Counseling and Addictions Services Employment Ontario Employment Services and Diabetes Program Patients requiring diagnostic or surgical services that are not available in Red Lake are referred out to tertiary health care centers to receive specialized care

During 1971 The Red Cross Hospital Officials and the Board of Governors from the Margaret Cochenour Hospital met to discuss the amalgamation of the two hospitals It was agreed that the new hospital be built in its present location in Red Lake One of the conditions of the amalgamation was to maintain the name quotMargaret Cochenour and to incorporate quotRed Lakequot into the hospital name Therefore the new name Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital would carry with it the pioneering spirit of both hospitals The Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital RLMCMH opened its doors on December 17 1973 The official opening occurred in May 1974 Mr Leo Bernier MPP and Mr John Reid MP officiated the ribbon cutting ceremony

History

The Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital is a fully accredited facility with 14 acute care beds and 4 long term care Clients with complex medical problems travel to larger centres in order to receive specialized care

There are approximately one hundred and twenty employees making the Hospital a major employer in the region The Hospital is equipped and staffed to respond to all basic health care needs

HISTORY

THE RED CROSS HOSPITAL RED LAKE
The fire during the 1940s also made it evident that a hospital was also needed in Red Lake The town purchased a bunkhouse for 1 and converted it into the ARed Lake Red Cross Outpost Hospital It stood where the present IGA store stands today The twentytwo bed hospital was staffed with three registered nurses and a Matron today known as a Head Nurse The nursing staff lived in the basement of the building so that they were available to assist the two pioneer physicians Dr Daniel and Dr McMammon throughout the night Dr McMammon eventually left after many years as he was awarded a scholarship at the Mayo ClinicThe Hospital also provided obstetrical pediatric and medical services however only emergency surgical procedures were done It was not uncommon for the surgeons from both hospitals to assist each other during surgery
