Washington Hospital Center is the largest private hospital in the nations capital The Hospital Center was founded in March 1958 when three specialty hospitals merged to form a single institution The notforprofit hospital is a proud member of the MedStar Health network and shares a 47acre campus with three medical facilities in Northwest Washington DC

The Hospital Center facility has 926 licensed beds and offers primary secondary and tertiary health care services to adult and neonatal patients During fiscal year 2008 FY08 398308 outpatient and 44598 inpatient visits occurred at the hospital including 4910 births Nearly 90 regional medical facilities referred close to 6700 of their most complicated medical cases to Washington Hospital Center in this year The Hospital Center employs one of the regions most experienced medicaldental and surgical staff numbering 1600 physicians many of whom are involved in more than 400 clinical research trials underway its 26 clinical residency and fellowship programs attract more than 300 medical students annually

Washington Hospital Centers premiere program in cardiovascular services is among the top 20 centers in the US with volumes of 9110 inpatient cardiac admissions 21763 cardiac catheterizations 8295 electrophysiology procedures 1814 openheart surgeries three heart transplants and 18 implantations of ventricular assist devices in FY08 The Hospital Centers V entricular Assist Device Program is the only facility in Washington accredited by The Joint Commission More than 150 heart transplants have been performed at the Hospital Center since its first procedure on May 22 1987

In addition the Hospital Center is a respected top facility in treatment of stroke neurological illness and injury gastrointestinal disorders and womens services This fiscal year USNews amp World Report recognized Washington Hospital Center as one of the nations Best Hospitals for heart and heart surgery endocrine disorders respiratory and geriatric care The Hospital Centers Primary Stroke Center admitted 535 patients and is the first stroke program in the area accredited by The Joint Commission Through its affiliation with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Center the hospitals stroke neurologists have access to cutting edge research protocols not available at other hospitals Its adult burn center recognized as a national model in burn care therapies and the regions only facility treated 377 patients in this year

Comprehensive oncology care makes The Washington Cancer Institute WCI at Washington Hospital Center the preferred treatment facility for more cancer patients than any other program in the nations capital In FY08 the Cancer Institute saw 76464 outpatient visits diagnosed 2494 new cancer cases and was chosen by 15016 patients who came through its Center for Breast Health WCI provides the full range of surgical radiation and medical oncology services access to the latest clinical trials patient and family counseling cancer education and community outreach programs

The Hospital Centers kidney and pancreas transplantation programs are in the top five percent in the country with patient outcomes that consistently exceed the national average During this fiscal year 86 kidney transplants and three kidneypancreas transplants were performed

The Hospital Centers most farreaching presence is MedSTAR Transport The air ambulance service has carried 46624 patients since its inception in 1983 and in FY08 flew 3121 helicopter missions The MedSTAR Trauma program is one of the nations most advanced Level I shocktrauma units and is consistently recognized by The American College of Surgeons In this year there were 2445 trauma admissions and 78549 Emergency Department visits which included 19059 patient admissions
