History

There are several reasons why Thomaston consistently ranks among the top 100 small towns in America and Upson Regional Medical Center is proud to be a part of what makes our region a great place to call home Weve grown to meet the needs of those we serve while maintaining the traditional values that have sustained us across five decades

A History of Commitment

On a spring day in 1951 residents of Thomaston and surrounding areas gathered to celebrate the opening of the regions brand new medical facility then known as Upson County Hospital The fourstory building was the end result of community partnership and a common cause noted by a Thomaston Times editorial as the bond of solidarity which has always characterized Upson County folks This deep relationship between the hospital and those it serves has continued to grow over the years to create three major expansions

In the early 1970s the Harvey Annex was built to add more space and services to the hospital Almost 20 years later another major construction project took form resulting in the Hightower Annex When this addition was officially opened on January 14 1990 another major change was announced Upson County Hospital became Upson Regional Medical Center to represent the facilitys eightcounty service area In the years that followed URMC continued its trend of acquiring leadingedge equipment and adding care to accommodate patient needs But board members and hospital staffers also saw the need for additional growth to help the facility move effectively into the future In 2004 plans took form for the most ambitious project in the hospitals history an 18 million expansion and renovation initiative that would redefine regional health care

The latest chapter in URMCs proud history began with an April 12 2005 groundbreaking ceremony and concluded with a wellattended dedication on May 11 2007 at the hospitals new main entrance The completed project brings new services and amenities to visitors and patients including an Ambulatory Outpatient Center a spacious lobby area a 20 bedEmergency Services Center and expanded Radiology Department that includes a Womens Diagnostic Center Another innovative offering The wellness Center of URMC is the regions only fullservice health and fitness facility All of the these changes bring quality care close to home reinforcing the hospitals commitmentand close relationshipto those it serves

A Legacy of Involvement

Architects planned the original hospital and its subsequent expansions Construction crews and skilled craftsmen turned blueprints into buildings But none of this would have happened without the collective efforts of a caring community The Hospital Auxiliary a group of citizen volunteers raised funds for furnishings and equipment a year before the original facility opened Civic groups and individual families also contributed demonstrating the spirit of a region thats known for taking care of its own In turn many previous and current employees grew up in this area Many experienced physicians and specialists felt at home there on their first visit and chose to stay This common thread creates the ties that bind Upson Regional with the people it serves

Over the years Upson Regional has shown its commitment to providing exceptional care through expanded services and stateoftheart medical technology but thats only part of the story The hospital is equally dedicated to promoting preventive measures and healthy lifestyles through a broad range of outreach programs URMC became a smoke free facility and offered smoking cessation assistance years before it became a nationwide trend Health fairs and free blood pressure screenings take wellness beyond the hospitals walls Employees and medical staffers engage their neighbors through community involvement and volunteer work The people of Upson Regional treat patients with professional expertise that stems from personal commitment

Our Town Our Hospital

Thomaston may be a small town but it has a big heart for people It only takes a short time for newcomers to feel a sense of belonging that good feeling that comes from being part of an extended family So its only natural that URMC delivers leadingedge health care that focuses on individual needs After all our physicians nurses and staff belong to the community and view each patient as an important part of what makes our region so special For over 50 years weve grown to provide bigcity medical services with a homelike touch Its a promise you can count on today and in the years to come
