History

For nearly 60 years Methodist has been the home of internationally acclaimed heart surgeon Dr Michael E DeBakey who is recognized as the quotFather of Heart Carequot Methodist physicians and researchers are continuing the groundbreaking work begun by DeBakey and his associates including

the worlds first successful surgical treatment of an aneurysm of the thoracic aorta
numerous minimally invasive surgery procedures that repair ailing hearts and arteries with significantly reduced recovery times
cardiac catheterization echocardiography and cardiovascular radioimaging performed by physicians worldfamous for their expertise in such techniques
the first successful aortocoronary artery bypass using the large vein in the leg to bypass the blocked or damaged area between the aorta and coronary arteries a lifesaving operation now used throughout the world and
development of the MicroMed DeBakey VADOcirc the new generation of heart assist devices in collaboration with heart surgeon Dr George Noon and NASA engineers

The Methodist DeBakey Heart Center at The Methodist Hospital builds upon Methodists reputation as a leader in cardiac care providing comprehensive services including research preventive care and education diagnosis surgery and rehabilitation to effectively care for and treat people suffering from heart disease In 2003 studies conducted at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center led to FDA approval of the countrys newest cholesterollowering drugs

Methodist formed a partnership with Texas Childrens Hospital and Baylor to create the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy in 1999 The first program of its kind to combine basic science and clinical research with comprehensive pediatric and adult cell and gene therapy transplant units the center treats patients with cancer and other genetic diseases

In 2002 The Methodist Hospital was awarded Magnet status for exceptional nursing joining a small group of hospitals around the country acknowledged for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes

The Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center at the Methodist NI is the largest dedicated stroke unit in the Texas Medical Center and designated a certified primary stroke center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations JCAHO The Center is a leader in stroke research treatment prevention rehabilitation and recovery In 2006 The Methodist Hospital System led by the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center launched the Taking Strides4Stroke Community Stroke Awareness Campaign a fiveyear campaign designed to promote education and awareness of stroke symptoms treatment prevention and research throughout the greater Houston community

In January 2002 physicians at Methodist were the first in Texas to perform an islet cell transplant The promising experimental procedure gives hope to the 1 million Americans with Type 1 diabetes The islet cell transplant allows diabetics to produce their own insulin

Neurosurgeons at Methodist were among the first to offer surgical treatments for Parkinsons disease and continue to conduct studies to further such treatments
