History

Dr Ernest Pohle opened the 10bed Tempe Clinic Hospital on March 2 1944 with two patients Dr Pohle started the hospital to meet the needs of the growing military population serving at Williams Air Force Base in east Mesa Continuing to meet the communitys healthcare needs Dr Pohle established a laboratory and acquired the first Xray machine in Tempe through the generosity of the Ford Foundation

The hospital underwent expansions in the 1950s 1960s and 1970s to bring it to its current 103bed size In 1960 Dr Pohle transferred his ownership of the hospital to the Arizona Conference of Seventh Day Adventists who retained control until the sale to the St Lukes Health System in 1982 Today Tempe St Lukes Hospital is owned by IASIS Healthcare a privately held company committed to building communityfocused hospital networks in highgrowth markets IASIS Healthcare owns and operates 15 general acute care hospitals and one behavioral hospital in Arizona Florida Louisiana Nevada Texas and Utah
