History

Our History
Celebrating Nearly 100 Years of Community Service

In 2012 St Marys Hospital will celebrate its 100th anniversary Much has changed in the world of health care and medical technolnotogy over the past century but St Marys still reflects the vision of its founders a strong tradition of caring for the comnotmunity that would make them proud to this day

Nearly 100 years ago when St Marys County was just a sleepy rural enclave nestled close to the Chesapeake Bay health care was a far cry from todays whirring machines educational advancements and technology It was an age when it cost just two cents to send a letter and a quarter could buy a gallon of gas

It took many decades of growth including the expansion of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for the county to sustain a large healthcare facility such as St Marys Hospital It all began with seven men a small building in Leonardtown Maryland and some big dreams

The Early Years
Local physician Francis F Greenwell was among the seven founding fathers of the hospital He helped establish the first hospital building in 1912 in a private twostory home on Fenwick Street in Leonardtown near the Town Square The building had just six patient beds on the second floor Patients were transported by steamer to Baltimore Maryland for surgical procedures As time went on visiting surgeons came to the hospital weekly Just three years later in 1915 a new hospital was built on Point Lookout Road not far from the intersection of LeonardtownHollywood Road and Route 5 A Ladies Auxiliary which formed in 1916 helped sew mend linens and raise funds The wood frame hospital building underwent one expansion in 1931

Major Growth
After the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II a surge of workers came to Patuxent River spurring the construction of a new 32bed hospital in 1944 During the next 50 years five different building programs were undertaken including the addition of an East Wing in 1956 A denotcade later the original wood frame hospital was torn down and a twostory brick addition was built This addition known as the Peabody Wing was named after fundraiser and volunteer Eleanor Peabody A Critical Care Unit was added in 1973 while Emergency Pharmacy and Radiology were expanded and renovated in 1975 A new facility opened in spring 1984 on the hospitals then 31acre site now 42 acres

The hospital received a new look during its 1995 expansion to improve outpanottient services In 2002 the hospital broke ground on another major expansion project to accommodate the increasing demand for medical services and featured expanded surgical suites as well as a new thirdfloor unit with 34 telemetrymonitored rooms Currently a new twostory annex building is under construction to provide additional space for growth

In addition to physical building growth over the years the hospital has also seen significant advancements in services and technology including the latest in fully accredited imaging equipment such as MRI 64slice CT PETCT scans and digital mammography St Marys was also on the leading edge of hospitals throughout the country to introduce a completely integrated electronic medical record system in July 2008 This system allows physicians and clinicians to view patient records at the touch of a button from anywhere in the hospital and even in local doctors offices and homes Its CareMobile component
