About Us
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth Founded in 1856 the Hospital is one of the countrys largest independent charity Hospitals and the UKs premier Catholic Hospital We pride ourselves on the quality of our care our range of services and the quality of our consultants and staff who we believe to be the very best in their profession

Although we provide acute private healthcare services our charitable status is based on the fact that we utilise surplus funds to run St Johns Hospice located within the grounds of the Hospital This inpatient day care and community facility provides care without charge to people living within our wide catchment area

Both the hospital and the hospice take great pride in their heritage and especially in the Catholic ethos upon on which they were founded which assures patients of a commitment to care and compassion in the delivery of their healthcare The aim of both institutions is the same now as it was over 150 years ago to provide the highest quality health care for all those who seek it

History

Ever since it opened its doors in 1856 the Hospital of St John amp St Elizabeth has had a reputation for providing the most uptodate methods of care a reputation it has maintained to the present day

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy an Order of nuns who worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean war the hospital was originally situated next to the church of St John in Great Ormond Street in the centre of London From the start it pioneered the use of advanced nursing techniques to help the sick the dying and the needy in the local community

By 1897 demand for the hospitals services was so great that it sold its land to the famous Sick Childrens Hospital next door and moved to St Johns Wood where it was reopened by the Lord Mayor of London in 1901 and where it has remained ever since St Johns church was dismantled brickbybrick and rebuilt on the new site

In 1984 inspired by the same spirit of compassion and innovation on which it was founded the hospital opened St Johns Hospice initially with four inpatient beds for people with cancer it currently has 19 beds In 1987 it added day care and a pioneering hospice at home service to extend its support to people who prefer to spend the later stages of their illness in their own homes
