Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital is a Public District Hospital which is part of the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System The healthcare system is an integrated network of health care programs services and facilities At the core of the system is a 269bed acute care hospital with several distinct specializations and programs Specialized facilities and programs include the Regional Heart Program the Comprehensive Cancer Center Joint Replacement Center Regional Spine Center Women and Children Regional Wound Healing Center an Emergency Department and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU An expanded Emergency Department to accommodate the areas growing population is underway

Salinas Valley Memorial employs more than 2100 people and the Medical Staff includes 265 boardcertified physicians across a range of specialties

History

The 138bed Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital opened on April 20 1953 with 100 employees and 45 physicians The modern facility offered medical and surgical patient floors pathology and radiology labs operating rooms a fracture room a physical therapy unit and a pediatric unit with a nursery and a quotpacing roomquot for fatherstobe

The planning and fundraising efforts however started much earlieraround 1941 when the Salinas Community Hospital Association was formed Bruce Church a successful local businessman called on other influential citizens including Franklin Cornell James J King TR Merrill and Oscar Daley to lead more than 175 civic leaders in a major fundraising effort Church donated the land for the hospitals Romie Lane site and nearly 300000 was raised The campaign was put on hold with the onset of WW II but it resumed fervently in 1947 That same year the California State Legislature passed an act allowing communities to establish taxation districts to build hospitals and area voters approved the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital District Church was elected president of the Districts Board of Directors

On the day of the dedication March 29 1953 President Dwight D Eisenhower sent a letter of congratulations to Bruce Church In it he said the quotPeople of Salinas Valley have every right to be proud of this admirable example of local selfreliance and initiativequot commenting on the fact that no state or federal funds were used

Founders and early administrators envisioned a hospital equipped with the latest technology that offered citizens the opportunity to receive highquality health care without traveling out of the area Their vision inspired future administrators including Jesse A Riser 1950 to 1954 Ralph Call 1954 to 1971 and Ray Grove 1971 to 1984 Sam Downing named assistant administrator in 1972 and administrator in 1985 continues to lead the organization as its PresidentCEO

The hospitals first quartercentury was marked by significant advancements in technology The next 25 years would usher in a level of technology that would have been difficult to imagine even for the most forwardthinking individuals Through strong leadership fiscal responsibility strategic planning and a driving commitment to the highest quality patient care the hospital began its transformation into the comprehensive integrated health care system that it is today

The Harden Memorial Heart Center opened in 1987 grew to be a nationallyrecognized Regional Heart Program within its first 15 years Named one of the 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for Cardiac Intervention in 1999 and one of the 100 Top Hospitals for Stroke Care in 2002 the Heart Programs specialists now perform nearly 3500 cardiac catheterizations and more than 350 openheart surgeries each year

Between the late 1980s and present day Salinas Valley Memorial added programs and facilities to meet the needs of the growing community Highlights include
