History

Provena Health Central Illinois RegionRich in History

The story of Provena Health in east central Illinois starts less than 20 years after the Civil War Its rich tapestry of history would eventually unite four hospitals and two medical communities into one strong organization committed to creating communities of healing and hope in east central Illinois

The Provena United Samaritans Medical Center story
In 1882 Danville was a bustling community of 9000 people Streets were unpaved A small band of Franciscan Sisters were hard at work transforming a small 14room hotel into St Elizabeth Hospital Ten years later Lake View Hospital under the name of Vermilion County Hospital opened just a few blocks away from the new St Elizabeth Hospital constructed by the sisters Lakeview the new Protestant hospital was housed in the McCrone building on East Fairchild St right across from the present Danville High School With St Elizabeths Lake View Hospital andwithin a few short yearsa large VA hospital for veterans Danville residents had access to a wide range of modern facilities

The next half century was a time of tremendous expansion for the hospitals During this time both hospitals opened nursing schools Likewise there were hundreds trained in schools for lab and xray techs medical librarians and medical secretaries And as programs expanded so did the hospitals adding new wings and services to grow with the changing times In 1903 St Elizabeth hospital added the east wing and in 1919 the fourth floor medical surgical unit was added to accommodate 170 patients In 1896 Lakeview dedicated the north wing of the present hospital providing 32 rooms with beds and eight beds in the ward About 20 years later the first addition was built making Lake View Hospital a 100bed hospital

In 1929 John H Harrison of the CommercialNews gave funds for the building of what is known as the Minta Harrison Wing on the southeast corner of Lakeview Hospitalnaming it after his mother In 1918 a major operation cost 8 and the room cost was 350 per day But costs would soon increase as technology improved In 1923 in the same year they treated football star Red Grange for a broken arm Lake View hospital installed an Xray regarded as the best in the state Over time simple machines and crude devices would give way to major advances that transformed patient care from the discovery of penicillin to major improvements in cancer and heart care

In 1958 St Elizabeth Hospital broke ground for a sixstory patient tower And in 1959 a drive was conducted to raise funds to rebuild and modernize both hospitals At that time Lake Views name was again changed to Lakeview Memorial Hospital In 1973 St Elizabeths held the dubious distinction of being designated the area wide trauma center for the region and Lakeview added yet another wing this time to the south side of the hospital

But even as the miracles of science ushered in a new era of health care the cost of equipping multiple hospitals became daunting As expenses grew and services overlapped local hospitals entered a time of radical change In 1980 Lakeview Medical Center broke ground for the most extensive hospital building program in local history and in 1981 the oncology Center of Danville was opened southwest of the hospital and this unit was purchased by the hospital three years later In 1982 St Elizabeth Hospital dedicated their new west wing which housed a new emergency department surgery obstetrics and laboratory

1988 ushered in a new level of cooperation as St Elizabeth and Lakeview merged their operations to create United Samaritans Medical Center and to form a solid platform for growth For the next eight years the medical center continued to make significant improvements in local care United Samaritans opened a regional eye center brought advanced MRI technology to Danville and established its first Board of Directors for its hospital Foundation

The United Samaritans Foundation continued to grow and prosper and soon they were able to start the first donor recognition program in 1992 followed closely by an employee giving program as well as the Women Aware and HALO community outreach programs Soon the Foundation led the way among all the Provena Health Foundations in healthy community initiatives and community partnerships culminating in the first Festival of Trees held in 1997to become an annual tradition that lives on today

By the end of the decade the separate Catholic orders that operated both United Samaritans and Covenant Medical Center began talks with a third Catholic health care provider to create a new organization uniting seven hospitals 14 longterm care centers 28 clinics and five home health agencies under one umbrella organization In December of 1997 the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas created Provena Health and a new era of growth began

Now known as Provena United Samaritans the hospital made use of new resources to update facilities and services The medical center purchased new catheterization equipment built new labor and delivery suites and updated their facilities at the renamed Regional Cancer Center

The Strength of Two The vision of one
With a united vision Provena United Samaritans and Provena Covenant began to work more closely together to improve regional health care In 1999 the two joined forces to create the Provena Regional EMS system coordinating the emergency response activities of 47 agencies in eight counties And in 2000 they created the Provena HeartCare Network which now gives patients throughout the region access to one of the countrys premier cardiovascular surgical teams through a unique alliance with Cardiac Surgery Associates a respected Provena partner

Since 1882 medical pioneers and caring visionaries in east central Illinois have had a role in transforming medical care From primitive intervention to major technological innovations theyve acted whenever the moment was right to ensure a higher quality of health care for the community
