ORMC meets the growing health care needs of our community providing a wide range of medical services and numerous specialty centers These include memory disorder epilepsy and the Orlando Health Rehabilitation Institute OHRI the esteemed Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program BIRC and outpatient surgery services


History

Orlando Regional Medical Center began its tradition of caring and healing in 1918 on the heels of World War I in the midst of the Spanish Flu epidemic that raged across the world Orange General Hospital as it was known then was supported financially by community members and a dedicated group of doctors By 1945 Orange General had become the third largest private hospital in the state and one of a few to receive approval from the American College of Surgeons Soon after in May 1946 the hospital changed its name to Orange Memorial Hospital as a tribute to the women and men who served in the world war

The hospital grew even more during the decades to come By March 1950 the average daily census was 217 an alltime record high Later in 1952 admissions peaked at more than 11000 In 1953 the hospital acquired equipment needed to offer Xray therapy Following in 1962 the hospitals new A and B wings were completed bringing the bed count to 600 and included new maternity areas laboratory and pharmacy departments additional surgical suites a recovery room and a central supply area In 1963 the first physical therapy department was established and in 1965 Orange Memorial performed the first openheart surgery of its kind in Central Florida

Years later on March 1 1977 with the consolidation of Orange Memorial Hospital and Holiday Hospital Orlando Regional Medical Center was born The 1980s brought CT scanning which provided specialized studies of many of the bodys systems and Central Floridas only Level One Trauma Center Since 1983 ORMC has been providing the most sophisticated level of care for trauma emergencies in the fivecounty Central Florida region In 1994 Air Care the first twinengine EMS helicopter in Florida and the only hospitalbased rescue service in Central Florida was the first air ambulance in Florida to receive accreditation of Air Medical Services CAAMS and only the 11th such program nationally to receive this accreditation

As Central Floridas only designated teaching hospital ORMC supports graduate medical education programs in seven residencies including emergency medicine internal medicine OBGYN orthopedics pathology pediatrics and surgery USNews amp World Report has ranked ORMC among quotAmericas Best Hospitalsquot for cardiac care three out of four years Also for four consecutive years ORMC was among 152 hospitals nationally to be named a quotConsumer Choice Awardquot winner by National Research Corporation ORMC also has been named one of Central Floridas top quotfamily friendlyquot organizations
