History

History
The Oconee Medical Center campus is situated on 150 acres of land originally donated by Dr William Robert Doyle and his wife Lila Stribling Doyle in the early 1930s Construction of the hospital began in 1938 with leveling and excavation done by WPA workmen using shovels and wheelbarrows The hospital admitted its first patient on January 31 1939

A 1950 addition included a new wing in the rear center of the hospital as well as a basement and another floor of bed space on the buildings west side By 1957 the hospital offered 77 beds

In May 1963 a new hospital located at the site of the present Oconee Medical Center opened with 126 beds After extensive renovation and the addition of a new wing the original building reopened in 1967 as Lila Doyle Chronic Hospital later renamed to Lila Doyle Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Facility

An addition to the back of the main hospital in 1974 provided space for ancillary and support services including expansion of the Laboratory Xray and Dietary departments As Oconee County continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s so did the need for Oconee Medical Centers services By 1980 an addition to the facility increased the number of available beds to 160

During the 1990s the hospital continued to see growth of both its facilities and services including
1990 opening of the Wellness Center
1997 opening of the New Beginnings Birthing Center Outpatient Diagnostic
Center and Ambulatory Surgery Department
1998 opening of the Comprehensive Pain Treatment Center Heart Care Center
and Heart Catheterization Laboratory
1999 creation of Oconee Medical Centers HomeCare Network

In the new millennium Oconee County has continued to serve the Golden Corner community by providing more and better services In 2003 opened both a new Endoscopy Suite and a new MRI Suite June 2003 saw the graduation of the original class of residents of Oconee Medical Centers Rural Residency Program the first of its kind in South Carolina
