Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887 The hospital provides a wide range of medical surgical diagnostic therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem West Harlem Washington Heights and Inwood Harlem is the largest hospital in the area capable of treating the most seriously ill Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services dentistry and oral surgery behavioral health services and community substance abuse treatment
Harlem is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center with a full spectrum of specialty services including an adult intensive care unit a respiratory intensive care unit a pediatric intensive care unit and a cardiac care unit Harlem operates one of only a few Burn Units in New York City that include a specialty in plastic and reconstructive surgery to reduce the scarring unique to the AfricanAmerican community

Harlem is moving swiftly into the futureand the second year of its fiveyear modernization plan The 249 million fiveyear modernization plan includes demolishing antiquated buildings renovating 183000 square feet and building a 150000 square foot Patient Pavilion Plans include a new Emergency Department stateoftheart critical care and diagnostic units and new fully equipped operating rooms The modernization will connect the Martin Luther King Jr Pavilion and the Ronald H Brown Pavilion parking garage and EMS Stations creating one large healthcare complex for the Harlem community

The modernization project is an example of Harlems Hospital Centers anticipation of future health issues The hospital has also instituted wellness programs measures patient satisfaction and has implanted quality review programs to assure that patients receive the highest quality health care
