History

In the late 1940s Dr Frederick Gruneck a retired physician envisioned a major medical center for the then rapidly expanding orchard community of the San Fernando Valley and pioneered the humble beginnings of this stellar community hospital in 1955 Starting out as a modest 49bed hospital with a oneroom emergency room Northridge Hospital has grown with the San Fernando Valley generation after generation

Would you believe that in 1955 A car cost 1950 a house cost 17500 and gasoline was 26 cents a gallon Bread was 18 cents a loaf and milk was 92 cents a gallon A postage stamp was three cents the average annual salary was 5000 and the minimum wage was 72 cents per hour

Proudly serving the 19 million residents of the San Fernando Valley for more than 50 years Northridge Hospital Medical Center is a 411bed notforprofit hospital that stands as a leading provider of quality healthcare to the community The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations JCAHO accredits Northridge Hospital Our medical staff consists of over 800 physicians who work with a team of approximately 1700 hospital employees including over 600 skilled and compassionate nurses Since 1999 Northridge Hospital has been a member of Catholic Healthcare West CHW

Northridge Hospital made headlines during the 1994 Northridge earthquake Despite being located at the epicenter of the 67 magnitude earthquake Northridge Hospital staff implemented a successful disaster plan allowing the hospital to remain open Dedicated health care professionals were able to treat over 1000 patients that came to Northridge Hospital in the first 48 hours following the earthquake in addition to caring for the existing patients


Today the Northridge Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center is one of only two hospitals in the San Fernando Valley equipped to treat traumatic and lifethreatening injuries The Thomas amp Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center is a fullyaccredited cancer center that offers the most comprehensive cancer treatment program in the Valley The Harold amp Carole Pump Department of Radiation Oncology offers stateoftheart treatment for all stages of cancer which is unprecedented in the Valley

The Heart Center invests in cardiac services and equipment that provide the most reliable surgical outcomes and less pain and recovery time for heart patients This stellar team is specialized in treatments including vascular brachytherapy cardiac catheterization implantable defibrillators electrophysiology and other types of cardiovascular procedures

The Womens Center provides a full spectrum of womens services in a private comfortable setting Our Babies First Maternity Services offers expectant mothers a variety of prenatal and childbirth services We offer a friendly and caring environment for the young patients in our Pediatric Unit In addition Northridge Hospital is equipped with an advanced Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as well as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for critical newborns

Behavioral Health Services offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care for both adults and teens Patients and family members have access to mental health assistance 24hoursaday seven days a week through the Northridge Hospital Crisis Line at 818 8855484 Northridge Hospitals specialized Center for Rehabilitation Medicine offers treatment for all major disabling conditions including spinal cord and brain injury stroke multiple trauma amputation neurological disorders arthritis and orthopedic problems
