History
History
1952 The Newton General Hospital Authority was created in February to meet the health care needs of Newton County
1954 Hospital opened on October 18 with a total of 36 beds
1961 An operating room was added and an additional 13 beds bringing the total to 49 beds
1969 Several ancillary departments were added along with 35 more beds Total bed capacity reaches 84
1971 The 6bed Florence Turner Arnold Intensive Care Unit was designated bringing the total to 88 beds
1984 The Intensive Care Unit was renamed the Robert and Florence Arnold Critical Care Unit
1984 A major expansion program was completed that brought the hospital to 90 licensed beds The change resulted in a new entrance facing Highway 278 as well as a new space for several clinical areas and an addition of the third floor to the hospital
1987 A new Outpatient Department was completed
1992 Work was completed on a new Emergency Department Laboratory Department Physical Therapy Department and Respiratory Therapy Department
1993 The expansion and renovation of the BirthCare Center was completed
1997 The new 60000 square feet Medical Office Building named the Physicians Pavilion opened
2000 The Womens Diagnostic Center was established
2002 The 103000 square feet Knox Surgical Center opened This spacious and ultramodern surgical care facility offers general surgery procedures an Endoscopy Lab and pain management services
2004 Newton General Hospital changed its name to Newton Medical Center
2007 Medical amp surgical beds were added bringing the facility to its current 97bed capacity
2009 New WoundCare Center with 2 hyperbaric chambers opens
