History

History
Our story begins in the late 1930s when an ailing Adam Reiss a GermanLutheran who had moved from the Midwest to retire in Coral Gables called his friend Ida Cohen to his bedside to tell her he wanted to donate 10000 to homes for the aged for three major western religions Ida took up the mission and under her leadership The Jewish Home for the Aged was incorporated on July 25 1940 with Ida Cohen as the first President

From those beginnings Miami Jewish Home and Hospital as we came to be called grew along with the burgeoning Miami community Led for many years by Judge Irving Cypen the organization grew to include not only a nursing home but an oncampus Hospital an Assisted Living Facility Independent Living Facility and began exploring innovative PACE Channeling and other programs to deliver healthcare services in the community

Today we serve some 3700 people each day in MiamiDade Broward and Palm Beach Counties We recently changed our name to Miami Jewish Health Systems to better reflect the breadth comprehensiveness and focus of our efforts As an internationally renowned innovative leader in health care we serve patients and residents from 4 years in age to 105 We promote longer healthier more enriched lives for patients and residents of all ages cultures and faiths
