History

Mercy San Juan Medical Center established in 1967 and located in Carmichael continues the mission that began 150 years ago when the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Northern California to devote their lives to care for the uneducated and the sick


Mercy San Juan doctors lead a healthcare team that prides itself in patientcare excellence embracing every opportunity to combine the latest technology with the most comprehensive and compassionate care available

Mercy San Juan has evolved from a 215bed community hospital to a 260bed medical center adding key specialty areas such as cardiac services the Mercy Cancer Center the Mercy Center for Breast Health the Mercy Sleep Center the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Mercy Home Health and Mercy Hospice

The year 1999 marked a milestone for Mercy San Juan The Trauma Center opened and all Mercy San Juan patients benefited as the hospital added specialty doctors and enhanced laboratory and imaging services to provide the 24hour services necessary for a Level II trauma program

Today Mercy San Juan receives more ambulance traffic than any Sacramento area hospital Whats more the American College of Surgeons calls Mercys trauma program one that other hospitals should use as a blueprint

Looking ahead Mercy San Juan is planning a 100 million expansion scheduled to bring 100 new patient beds to north Sacramento and south Placer County by the year 2008 Learn more about our Hospital Expansion plans

1989 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opens as 6bed unit at Mercy San Juan

1990 First Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU Reunion held

1990 Mercy San Juan opens cardiac cath lab and begins cardiac surgery

1991 NICU moves into new space and expands to 18 beds

1991 American River Hospital purchased and renamed Mercy American River Hospital Its operations begin to merge with Mercy San Juan

1995 Mercy San Juan first receives designation for Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program from American College of Surgeons


1998 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program receives accreditation from the American Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists

1999 Trauma Center opens with 69000square foot expansion including new 31bed Emergency Department

2000 Mercy American River Hospital closes with all staff offered jobs at other Mercy facilities

2000 Trauma Center receives American College of Surgeons verification the gold standard for trauma centers

2001 Name changed to Mercy San Juan Medical Center to more accurately reflect breadth of services

2002 Mercy Center for Breast Health opens

2003 Bariatric surgery program begins

2004 Mercy Cancer Center established on Mercy San Juan campus

2004 Recruitment of cancer surgeons Dr Jeffrey Pelton and Dr Stephen Maxwell leads to establishment of Mercy Cancer Center on Mercy San Juan campus

2005 Stroke program receives primary stroke center designation from Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations JCAHO

2005 Mercy Sleep Center doubles in size from four to eight beds and moves to new location on Auburn Boulevard
