History

25 Years and Growing Our History

Mercy Hospital of Folsoms origin lies deep within the heart of the community it serves In September of 1960 Jack Kipps fiveyear old daughter was playing next door when she got her foot caught in a rotary power lawn mower being operated by her best friend Jack heard her cries and went running When he reached his daughter she was in a pool of blood He scooped her up and ran her across the street to the convalescent home where they put a tourniquet on her badly bleeding foot He summoned a friend in the police department to drive them from Folsom down to North Sacramento to the closest hospital There she received care for cut tendons a broken big toe and 250 stitches in her foot At 2 am after a long days ordeal Jack and his wife finally sat down together and vowed to bring hospital care closer to home Twin Lakes Hospital was opened on Feb 19 1962 Jack who has served the Folsom community in many leadership roles including mayor was the first administrator of the new hospital

Sisters of Mercy step in
The hospital changed hands twice and was on the brink of closure when the Sisters of Mercy were asked to help They acquired the 30bed facility in 1980 to ensure the healthcare safety net would endure in the region During the 1980s the population of Folsom began booming as large employers including Intel moved to town In 1989 the Sisters opened a new 95bed hospital on Creekside Drive in Folsom located on a 26acre parcel of property donated by the Cummings and Tsakopoulos families

Mercy Hospital of Folsom has a long history of partnering with the community to provide the best possible healthcare services and facility for patients More than 20 years after the Sisters of Mercy acquired Twin Lakes Hospital and renamed it Mercy Hospital of Folsom the hospital continues to influence the health and wellbeing of the communities it serves well beyond the hospital walls From free health screenings to providing medical care for the communitys poorest through two community clinics Mercy Hospital of Folsoms mission of caring for all remains unchanged

Mercy Hospital of Folsom today

As the sole hospital serving Folsom and the foothills communities Mercy Hospital of Folsom is the primary healthcare resource for a population of more than 100000 residents a population that is expected to increase by nearly 50 over the next 10 years During the last several years as the population has grown Mercy Hospital of Folsom has experienced a dramatic increase in demand for services In response to this growth the hospital has added a fourth operating room expanded its Family Birth Center to include two new labor delivery and recovery rooms a 10bed maternal newborn unit and a new 10bed newborn nursery and is in the midst of expanding its rehabilitation and occupational medicine programs

During the same timeframe Mercy Hospital of Folsom experienced a 51 increase in Emergency Department volume In 2003 the hospitals leadership team began the process of planning an Emergency Department ED expansion This will be the first major expansion to the hospital since its move to Creekside Drive Plans include increasing the number of ED beds from seven to 25 to meet the needs of the community well into the future This fivefold expansion of Emergency Deparment space from 4620 square feet to 22410 will result in significant increases in treatment and waiting areas The planned expansion will also include shell space on the lower level to accommodate future additions to the hospital When the Emergency Department is completed in 2006 it will set a new standard for excellence in healthcare in the community
