History

McLaren started out with just 10 beds in 1914
Thanks to the vision of Lucy M Elliot MD and Lillian Girard RN McLaren Health Care Corporation and McLaren Regional Medical Center got their start at 808 Harrison Street in Flint as a private hospital Just five years later the hospital was reorganized and incorporated in 1919 as the Womens Hospital Association a community nonprofit hospital That same year 1919 various civic groups contributed toward the purchase of a sixacre site at 1900 Lapeer St Known as The Womens Hospital it had 29 patient beds

In 1929 a wing was added to increase bed capacity to 40 A fundraising drive in 1943 brought in 1 million from the Flint community for a new facility Consider how amazing that fundraising effort was during the midst of a world war But the facility would have to wait because construction materials were at a premium At the wars conclusion another fundraising drive drew in another 1 million from the community Construction of McLaren Regional Medical Center at 401 S Ballenger Highway began in July 1949

The new facility with 243 beds opened in October 1951 The hospital was named McLaren General Hospital after Margaret E McLaren RN who had served as Superintendent of the Womens Hospital for 28 years

Additional construction on a south wing to bring bed space to 436 beds began in 1968 and was completed in 1972 The late 70s saw further expansion of the main hospital facility and construction and addition of many satellite facilities A 50 milliondollar expansion to McLaren Regional Medical Center included a 12story patient care tower that opened in 1993

Reorganization of the corporate structure under McLaren Health Care Corporation began the 1990s Lapeer Regional Medical Center became a corporate subsidiary in 1992 and Ingham Regional Medical Center Lansing followed in June 1997 In 2001 Bay Regional Medical Center became the fourth subsidiary
