Martin Memorial Health Systems based in Stuart Fla comprises two hospitals two MediCenters a freestanding emergency center and numerous outpatient centers and clinics The system is a notforprofit communitybased health care organization that offers preventative primary and acute hospital care as well as cancer care a heart center wellness and rehabilitation services and much more Our services provide care for residents throughout the Treasure Coast including Stuart Jensen Beach Hobe Sound Palm City and Port St Lucie

Clinical research is a key element in Martin Memorials efforts to improve the treatments and lives of people in the community and includes an affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center Since 2001 more than 50 oncology clinical trials have been conducted through the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center Martin Memorial is continuing to expand its research capabilities into fields other than cancer ranging from rheumatology to cardiology and infectious diseases In addition Martin Memorial is a member of the Tradition Center for Innovation at Port St Lucie which includes Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute VGTI Florida and the Mann Research Center

Our two hospitals have 344 hospital beds244 at Martin Memorial Medical Center and 100 at Martin Memorial Hospital South Nearly 400 doctors and more than 2900 employees are dedicated to Martin Memorial Our generous volunteers give more than 187000 hours annuallythe equivalent of 97 fulltime employees

Martin Memorial is accredited by The Joint Commission one of the most respected accreditations in the nation It is a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center and has Commission on Cancer accreditation Martin Memorial Medical Center is a fivetime national winner of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals recognition which evaluates 3000 shortterm acute care nonfederal hospitals in the United States The Martin Memorial Center for Joint Replacement has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for diseasespecific care certification for joint replacement of the knee and hip

History

Martin Memorial was founded in 1939 The original hospital had 23 beds three physicians and 10 employees The three founding physicians Dr Julian D Parker Dr Van William Burns and Dr Walter F Davey saw an average of eight patients a day

Mr and Mrs William B Slocum Barstow provided the land and building for the original hospital and nurses home Mrs Verner Z Reed and Mr Joseph V Reed provided all furnishings and equipment

The hospital was founded on the principles that patients should have access to medical treatment regardless of ability to pay and treatment would be given to all people regardless of race
In 1956 the Martin Memorial Auxiliary began serving as volunteers for the hospital By 2007 there were 800 volunteers providing 164259 hours of service the equivalent of 86 fulltime employees

In 1983 the Martin Memorial Foundation was created It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008 having raised more than 64 million in funds that have helped provide highquality care to the community

In 1992 Martin Memorial Hospital became Martin Memorial Health Systems The hospital became Martin Memorial Medical Center and Martin Memorial Hospital South a second facility opened its doors

In 1999 the Martin Memorial Cancer Center opened It was renamed the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center in 2005

In 2006 the Frances Langford Heart Center opened
