Description

Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital is embarking on the biggest redevelopment in its history The population of Burlington and its surrounding area is quickly increasing and aging Our health care needs are growing and our hospital is feeling the pressure

The expansion and renewal plans for Joseph Brant will mark the first major change to the hospitals physical footprint since the 1970s This is a huge undertaking that will greatly benefit the health of our community for years to come

Our challenge in 2009 is once again to ask the community to rally behind our need to bring our hospital into the 21st century Total projected cost for this redevelopment is over 300 million for the first phase We are asking for your help in raising 120 million for the local share The hospital made a formal request to the city of Burlington to invest 60 million as their civic contribution toward the local share On Tuesday December 8 Burlington City Council voted unanimously to support our request
We have an opportunity to build history together The ability to leave our mark on the future of health care in our community is within our reach Together we can make this happen

History

Founded in the late 1950s by a group of citizens eager for a community hospital Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1961 and doubled in size in 1971 Internal renovations and minor expansions occurred in 1993 and 2001 Our focus has also been on updating and replacing medical technology and equipment to ensure our physicians healthcare professionals and staff have the best tools available Recently we partnered to build a new longterm care facility on land adjacent to the hospital

Joseph Brant is the only acute hospital in Burlington a community of about 170000 residents It serves a catchment area of a quarter million people not only in Burlington but communities in Halton and Hamilton including Waterdown Flamborough Stoney Creek and east Hamilton We have a highly skilled staff of 350 medical staff members 1400 fulltime and parttime professional care staff and more than 500 active Auxiliary volunteers The hospital is regarded as a leader in implementing best practices in a patient and family approach to care rooted in organizational values known as the CARE Commitment For several years the hospital was recognized as one of the top 100 employers in Canada

The hospital provides a range of primary and secondary services including specialty clinical services The expertise of our staff enables us to care for some patients with tertiary needs It also participates in and supports key regional programs including cancer care vascular and thoracic services cardiac care and maternal and newborn services Its emergency department supports the local community and handles about 46000 annual visits

Joseph Brant operates 285 beds and records 13800 admissions 95000 patient days 1500 births and 81500 ambulatory outpatient visits The hospital has a 135 million operating budget is community owned and based and governed by a Board of 17 members 12 of whom are drawn from the communityatlarge Their role is to ensure the hospital is operated effectively efficiently and safely and that it offers high quality patient care As quotownersquot of the hospital their mandate is also to be responsible to the communitys needs

Located in the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant HNHB LHIN 4 Joseph Brant is collaborating with other health service providers in several key clinical and administrative areas to establish and enhance continuums of care and maximize efficiency

Future demand for service will be influenced by both population growth and aging The population of Burlington is expected to grow about 14 per cent over the next 20 years while at the same time the number of seniors aged 85 years is expected to grow by almost 70 per cent This will have a major impact on the hospitals resources as seniors use on average four times the amount of health care resources as the average population

Joseph Brant is in urgent need of expansion and redevelopment of its facilities to respond to changes within the healthcare environment and growing community need Pressing needs include improved facilities to support infection control and prevention new technology and emerging clinical practice Over the next five to 10 years we are planning to renew and expand through a 618 million redevelopment and expansion capital project The first phase of the project will be the construction of a new sixfloor tower to be built on the current site estimated at 300 million As Burlingtons community hospital we remain committed to providing our patients and families with the highest possible level of health care
