History

Conceived in 1956 by Dr Werner Fliesser longtime Hoopeston physician Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital Inc was created as a notforprofit corporation The hospital opened its door in July of 1962 with the assistance of Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society who owned and operated the facility

Since the opening of the facility there have been several changes made to benefit the people of the community and surrounding areas In 1972 a 50bed skilled nursing home was constructed adjacent to the hospital

Years later to meet growing needs the Hoopeston Community Memorial Nursing Home added an additional 25beds in 1995 to offer a total of 75 beds But that wasnt all that was done in 1995 The hospital kitchen was expanded and Country Terrace a 30 apartment senior independent living community was also opened

Following financially difficult times the hospital was sold in 1986 to Westworld Community Healthcare Inc which then filed bankruptcy in 1987 In order to save the hospital from closing the community and area rallied to raise the necessary funds to purchase the hospital out of bankruptcy

In 1998 Hoopeston Area Healthcare Foundation was formed as a separate notforprofit entity focused on raising funds to give both the hospital family and the community the opportunity to support Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital in continuing to provide high quality healthcare services

As part of a three phase growth project Charlotte Ann Russell Medical Center was built in 2000 The center offers a 10000 square foot medical practice building that houses family care physicians physician assistants and many visiting specialists The second phase of the project included the development of a new emergency room entrance which has been completed The last phase of the growth project currently underway includes remodeling of Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital adding additional square footage and upgrading existing outpatient areas

The Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital is also trying to serve the people of the surrounding communities by purchasing and opening two out of town clinics Rossville Medical Clinic and Cissna Park Medical Clinic And as a part of recent affiliation agreement with Carle Foundation Hospital the Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital is now able to offer more services than ever
