History

OUR HISTORY
An 11yearold dream came true on February 22 1916 when Hillsboro Hospital was formally opened It was George Washingtons birthday when the late Judge Amos Miller president of the hospital board chose these words for the 1916 dedication

quotOn this opening day we dedicate this building and all its equipment to the service of relieving pain and restoring health and vigor to the sick and injured But in a deeper sense if possible let us one and all dedicate ourselves to an unselfish service for the support and maintenance of this hospital to the end that it may become a blessing to the people of Hillsboro and the surrounding communityquot

AB Frankel East St Louis architect submitted plans in April 1914 for the threestory hospital estimated to cost 20000 By July 1915 only 10110 of 21200 in pledges had been paid and outstanding bills totaled 1600 Plans had called for opening the hospital on July 4 19 15 but it was not until Washingtons birthday in 1916 that the doors were opened to the public

The first patients to enter the hospital were charged 15 per week for corner rooms 10 and 12 per week for other rooms and 8 per week for beds in the wards

New Home for Hospital
The new hospital didnt just happen It took nearly four years of serious thinking and careful planning for it to become a reality The board of directors headed by Harold Sitton began to plan for the new hospital in November 1971 when the state informed the hospital board that the existing hospital could not pass safety standards because basic wooden construction posed a fire hazard The new Hillsboro Area Hospital became a reality on October 23 1975 when the 100bed facility was dedicated on Tremont Street

Since opening the facility in 1975 building did not stop The DouglasTelfer Outpatient Clinic was dedicated in 1990 to the Douglas and Telfer Families with their long history of service to patients in our area Heartland Home Care occupies a duplex with Dr Brian Cady built at the same time

Tremont Ridge Assisted Living Facility opened December 2003 and the Special Care Cottage for dementia and Alzheimers residents opened October 2004

The Future of Healthcare in Montgomery County
On Thursday September 25 2008 Hillsboro Area Hospitals CEO Rex Brown joined by members of the Hospitals Board of Directors System and Foundation Boards the Illinois Hospital Association the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network and Lincolnland College broke ground to make room for the Hillsboro Area Hospital Revitalization Project During the last week of August demolition of the North Wing of the hospital began in order to make way for an additional 12180 square feet of interior space which will soon house a new stateoftheart Emergency Department and Comprehensive Imaging Center as well as new class rooms to help educate future healthcare professionals
McDonalds not a wise choice for hospitals

Hospitals are places where wellness and health are supposed to be beneficial to promote a longer and healthier life When you walk into a hospital you expect to see healthy places to eat and if not that then a cafeteria with low sodium foods If you put hospitals and fast food restaurants together it is kind of a contradiction promoting health yet...
