History

The first quothospitalquot recorded in Rusk County was located in the home of Dr William Ross in Mount Enterprise In 1845 he built his early home which included a quotsick roomquot set aside to care for his more seriously ill patients On April 12 1928 Dr and Mrs Reuben Franklin Shaw deeded two tracts of property to the Henderson Hospital Association which was composed of Dr Shaw and Doctors JH Spivey Joseph Graham Sadler and Charles A Dawson Four days later the hospitals charter was issued with 10000 in capital stock

The new hospital consisted of the old Wettermark residence purchased on January 2 1927 by Dr and Mrs Shaw AH Wettermark a wealthy Nacogdoches banker who opened Hendersons first financial institution built the two story home in the late 1800s The home was later remodeled to meet the needs of a medical facility On July 27 1927 the Shaws purchased a second tract of property adjacent to the Wettermark site which was used for many years as nurses home and later as a classroom facility for Licensed Vocational Nurses

The hospital opened and received its first patient on July 1 1928 There were some doubts when the hospital opened that it could sustain itself however the oil boom of 1930 assured its success In April 1931 a separate frame building was constructed on the hospital grounds to be used as an isolation ward for the treatment of contagious diseases In 1935 a second addition was erected adjacent to the Wettermark house to accommodate a new delivery room a nursery and 11 additional patient rooms In March of 1939 Doctors Spivey Shaw and CG Engle abolished the Hospital Association to form Henderson Memorial Hospital a nonprofit organization No income or benefits accrued to any individuals All revenues generated by the hospital were turned back into the organization for purposes of expansion equipment purchases and operation of the facility Additional expansions and improvements were made including a second story added to the 1935 addition a new cafeteria the west wings and a hospital chapel

In January 1964 a major new addition opened with 20 patient rooms a new main entrance lobby and waiting room new business and administration offices a medical library and xray cast and treatment rooms A second major expansion program begun in 1973 added a new threestory wing housing a five room intensivecoronary care unit and increased patient capacity to 114 beds The main entrance was also changed to front on Wilson Street In 1982 a fourth floor was added to this wing

Henderson Memorial Hospital continues to operate as a 96 bed nonprofit facility under the guidance of a Board of Directors elected from the local community A Family Health Clinic was added in 1996
