Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital is proud to have served the community since 1907 Originally located on Monterey Street downtown the hospital moved to its present location in June of 1962 Five years prior to that in 1957 the voters of San Benito County voted for the formation of a quotHospital Districtquot We are pleased to bring you the following information about the Districts health care facilities services and medical staff It is our hope that you will have a better understanding of the wide array of services that we provide to the community

We feel it is important to not only fulfill the healthcare needs of the community but to be an active part of the community as well We take pride in participating in or sponsoring numerous community events such as the Saddle Horse Show Parade the Lights on Celebration the Relay for Life Spotlight on Hollister and the county fair to name a few We also realize that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow and we support the activities of baseball and softball leagues scouting groups swim teams the YMCA and other youth organizations

We have staff members and physicians who represent the hospital in the Rotary club the Chambers of Commerce the Hollister Downtown Association and various other civic organizations And last but not least we recognize our wonderful volunteers who are our ambassadors to the community with the numerous hours of service they provide to the hospital We applaud their philanthropic endeavors in providing scholarships to local students and equipment to the District in order to help us fulfill our mission of serving the community

The death of a Hollister child in 1902 caused repercussions that are still being felt here a century later

Nine year old Hazel Hawkins died from an appendicitis The tragic death of Mr T S Hawkins granddaughter his quotLittle Sunshinequot led him to make a public commitment that no other member of this community would have to die for lack of adequate health facilities

And so Mr T S Hawkins from his love and as a griefstricken grandfather founded Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital to serve the community of Hollister and all residents of San Benito County and created an enduring tribute to the memory of his quotLittle Sunshinequot His dream has become a successful reality the legacy of his cherished granddaughter Hazel lives on

Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital originally located on Monterey and Hawkins Street in Hollister was presented to the public November 13 1907 and served as the communitys principal hospital until the new district hospital was completed The issue of quotHospital Districtquot formation was submitted to voters and passed by a margin of two to one on December 10 1957 The dedication of the new quotDistrictquot hospital on Sunset Drive was June 13 1962 the first patients were admitted on June 19 1962
