History

Good Samaritan Hospital opened its doors as an acutecare hospital with a staff of 400 on September 22 1965

The actual planning and fundraising began years before when it became apparent that the growing west valley needed superior hospital services Members of local Episcopalian and Methodist churches banded together to raise the funds for construction costs equipment a chaplaincy and the hospitals auxiliary After two years of construction the new hospital dedicated to the whole person mind body and spirit was ready for business

Fundraising and planning efforts between 1968 and 1974 allowed the hospital to double in size By 1974 Good Samaritan had 403 patient beds and new services including cardiovascular diagnostic and surgical services intensive care coronary care and an expanded emergency department

During the 1980s the expansion continued adding new cardiovascular facilities familycentered birthing facilities oncology services and increased psychiatric facilities

In the 1990s the hospital added robotics a stroke team a level III neonatal intensive care unit and a helicopter transport Good Samaritan Hospital also purchased the 99bed Mission Oaks Hospital in Los Gatos to provide outpatient and shortstay services and outpatient cancer treatment
