History

You may not remember when Glendale had dirt roads or a population of only 500 But we do In fact Glendale Adventist Medical Center is one of the citys oldest businessesfounded in 1905 a year before Glendale was incorporated as a city Back then we were known as Glendale Sanitarium and we occupied the former Glendale Hotel a beautiful 75room Victorian structure on what is now Broadway Avenue

Then we were owned and operated by the Seventhday Adventist Church And it was our Christian mission of community caring that helped form our farreaching reputation as a quothealth resortquot of choice Now as part of Adventist Health this same mission continues stronger than ever

As people flocked to the Sanitarium for our groundbreaking wellness programs many fell in love with Glendale also known as quotThe Jewel Cityquot And as the city grew we grew right along with itbringing good health to our neighbors every step of the way

Although Glendale Adventist Is The Citys Oldest Hospital Its Earliest Approaches To Health Are Still Making News
Believe it or not some doctors at the turn of the century prescribed tapeworms for obesity and tobacco for lung ailments But Glendale Sanitarium took a much different approach common sense and wellness Shunning alarming medical fads we offered a healthy diet exercise rest and recreation as more effective alternatives In fact from the start we focused not just on treating the sick but on teaching people how to stay healthy

Over the years that approach has never changed We were for example among the first to offer stopsmoking classes and today we offer more than 50 classes geared to nearly every age and need Were very proud to say weve spent nearly a century keeping Glendale healthy Indeed it comes as no surprise that although fads persist todays medical community has overwhelmingly embraced the very same principles of wellness that we helped pioneer
