Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center located in the Echo ParkSilver Lake community of Los Angeles is a nonprofit organization providing acute inpatient residential and outpatient services to mentally ill adolescents and adults It was founded with the belief that those with little or no resources should have access to the same high quality services available as those with the ability to pay

Gateways was a pioneer in the provision of communitybased services to the mentally ill opening its first 12bed facility in 1953 A new campus nestled in parklike surroundings not far from Dodger Stadium was opened in 1961 and dedicated by Eleanor Roosevelt Over the ensuing years Gateways has developed a variety of services and programs to assist some of societys most challenged individuals and their families We offer programming to aid the homeless mentally ill the dually diagnosed eg those that experience both substance addiction and mental illness the mentally ill and atrisk teens and the mentally ill exiting the criminal justice system

Gateways operations are delivered on four separate campuses The main campus on Effie St houses a 55bed acute psychiatric hospital serving adults and adolescents an adolescent outpatient program and a 70bed adult residential center The Hoover St campus has 37 residentiallylicensed transitional housing beds a sheltered vocational workshop and a Homeless Services Center that includes emergency shelter beds a dropin center and a homeless outreach program The third campus houses our 12000 square foot outpatient forensic program center
