Floyd Medical Center and its affiliates are operated by Floyd Healthcare Management Inc We provide a full spectrum of health care services from prenatal childbirth classes to grief support groups through Heyman HospiceCare at Floyd More than 2000 babies are born at Floyd each year and are cared for in one of our three nurseries including a neonatal intensive care nursery for babies as small as two pounds

Founded in 1942 as Floyd Hospital our organization has grown to include a 304bed notforprofit teaching hospital Floyd Medical Center and a full range of ancillary services in the Coosa Valley region We are home to a statedesignated Level II Trauma Center a behavioral health center primary care and urgent care network of providers We also host a realm of outpatient services including the operation of the Floyd County Clinic and an associated pharmacy for uninsured patients who cannot otherwise afford health care

History

The Floyd family of health care services has responded to the health needs of Rome and surrounding communities in Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama since 1942

More than six decades ago a group of men with the vision to build a community hospital for the citizens of Floyd County set about making the dream a reality

Lead by Dr WH Lewis the Floyd County Board of Revenues took its vision to the people who readily embraced the idea

Built by county labor and funded by the citizens of Floyd County what was then called Floyd Hospital opened its doors on July 4 1942

Since its beginning as a 70bed pavilion style structure Floyd has continued a tradition of care by adding services building new facilities and offering the latest in medical technology Today Floyd serves six counties as a 304bed acute care hospital and regional referral center with more than 400000 patient encounters annually

July 4 1942 Floyd Hospital opened as a
70bed paviliontype structure with five wings

1946 A twostory rock wing was constructed adding 40 beds delivery rooms a nursery and a blood bank

1956 A 1 million fourfloor wing increased the bed count to 180 The new wing housed new operating rooms a laboratory Xray department and a kitchen

1962 A fourstory wing was built to house the pediatric department acute medical and surgical beds and an intensive care unit A psychiatric care area also opened

1971 A 1 million east extension and renovation began An infection control program was started and the Floyd Hospital Auxiliary was formed

1976 A 65 million 98000 squarefoot fourstory wing was added marking the first phase in the development of Floyd Hospital as a regional medical center The Family Practice Residency program was added

1977 Floyd Hospital became Floyd Medical Center Floyd entered into a management agreement with Chattooga County Hospital and Oak View Nursing Home

1979 The surgery department expanded and a new medical and surgical Intensive Care Unit was built Floyd Health Care Foundation was organized

1981 Floyd Medical Center was designated as a Level II Trauma Center making it a referral center for patients with complex trauma care needs

1984 Floyd Home Health Agency was acquired and the ambulance service began nonemergency transfers

1986 An 18 million renovation project began adding two floorsthe fifth floor for cardiovascular patients and the sixth for psychiatric and substance abuse patients

1987 A fourlevel parking deck and enclosed overhead walkway across Turner McCall Boulevard was constructed

1988 A threestory Medical Office Building was constructed A 14bed Diabetic Care Center and an Outpatient Surgery Center opened The 75000th baby was born at Floyd Medical Center

1989 The North addition opened with a new lobby patient service area administrative offices and Floyd rehabilitation services

1990 Floyd opened six ambulance stations in Floyd County Construction included quotMy Housequot a five bedroom home for outoftown families of critically ill patients and a fivebed inpatient rehabilitation unit

1992 A freestanding psychiatric hospital and Shorter Medical Arts Center opened The Emergency Care Center and maternity department expanded doubling their sizes Floyd began offering hospice services to the community

1993 A new mammography suite opened and a new chest pain program was added to the Emergency Care Center

1994 The Centrex Primary Care Network was established with 26 physicians in 15 Primary Care practices Urgent Care amp Occupational Medicine opened in Rome

1998 The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was expanded to 4000 square feet Floyd opened the first Congestive Heart Failure Clinic in Rome

1999 Floyd introduced the first formal Bicycle Paramedic Team Floyds rehabilitation services introduced three new specialized programs Osteoporosis Clinic Aqua Therapy and Vestibular Rehabilitation Floyd opened the first public information center The Community Health Resource Center at Mount Berry Square mall

2000 The Specialty Hospital a separate entity opened on the fourth floor of Floyd Medical Center The Community Health Resource Center opened at Mount Berry Square Our imaging center installed the new GE Lightspeed CT scanner

2001 Floyd expanded its role as the primary provider of health care to the indigent by assuming operation of the Floyd County Clinic Floyd began offering lymphedema therapy and announced major expansion plans

2002 Floyd opened a new 16 million Cardiac Catheterization Lab and a 22 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging Suite Floyd began demolition of the 1946 rock building to make room for the construction of a new energy plant

2003 Floyd continued its significant expansion project and opened a new luxurious patient care unit The Palatine Suites

2004 Floyd unveiled a new main entrance and a new look The new lobby welcomed visitors with a warm atrium colorful artwork beautiful landscaping and fountains It marked the completion of Phase II of our expansion project Floyds logo received a fresh new look and moved to the upward quotyquot and what everyone would soon be calling the new Floyd Green

2005 The Physicians Center and parking garage opened on the Floyd Medical Center campus in February

The facility houses Floyds Outpatient Surgery Center new Operating Room of the Future Floyd Primary Care offices and several Harbin Clinic physician offices

2006 Neurological Sciences unit opened in April and later is recognized as Primary Stroke Center by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
