History

OUR HISTORY
For a young hospital built in 1994 Florida Hospital Fish Memorial has a long history dating back to 1952 and legendary philanthropist Judge Bert Fish whose name continues to be revered In more recent years Orange City Health Affiliates Inc a notforprofit healthcare company created by Florida Hospital purchased the West Volusia Hospital Authoritys interest in Volusia Medical Center for 45 million in June 1996 The Southwest Volusia Healthcare Corporation continued to operate Volusia Medical Center with Florida Hospital as the managing entity Volusia Medical Center and the Bert Fish Foundation agreed to rename the hospital to reap the benefits of the strong Florida Hospital name while also paying tribute to the hospitals legacy Judge Bert Fish Volusia Medical Center was renamed Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in April 1998

Florida Hospital Fish Memorial has a heritage that traces back to Judge Bert Fish Judge Fish spent his life serving the United States from his appointment as Reading Secretary to the Florida State Senate at the turn of the century to the Ambassador role he played with Egypt and Portugal Though his travels were vast his heart was never far from Volusia County Florida He left behind his wealth to establish the Bert Fish Foundation The Foundation funds healthcare clinics and facilities in Volusia County to assist in caring for the indigent In addition it supports healthcare educational efforts to ensure the latest advances are available to the people of Volusia County

1952
The contributions made by the Bert Fish Foundation have been an integral part of the success of healthcare facilities and education in Volusia County In 1952 Fish Memorial Hospital opened in DeLand as a 50bed facility located on a site donated by the Fish family It expanded over the years to 97 beds

1987
The West Volusia Hospital Authority WVHA purchased Fish Memorial Hospital When the time came to refurbish the facility the WVHA had the foresight to relocate the hospital to a venue that would provide easy access for Orange City DeBary and Deltona residents Subsequently the outpatient clinic called Volusia Medical Center and the inpatient facility called Fish Memorial Hospital were built on the same campus in Orange City and opened in September 1994 Before becoming known as FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial the new facility endured a period of transition as it struggled as one facility operating under dual names Volusia Medical Center and Fish Memorial Hospital

1996
Florida Hospital a partner in establishing the new facility purchased the remaining interest for 45 million from the WVHA and acquired the hospital

This year saw the opening of Deltona Health Center a joint effort with the Volusia County Health Department to offer a health services alternative in Deltona

The outpatient clinic expanded to accommodate the new Center for Radiation Oncology and new clinic entrance

1998
A new name Florida Hospital Fish Memorial was chosen to reflect the affiliation with Florida Hospital give the hospital a single identity and honor its heritage by preserving the life achievements of Judge Bert Fish With Florida Hospitals tremendous resources and expertise the community hospital has continued to thrive with new services

2003
A 15 million 56000squarefoot inpatient tower expansion added three floors and 42 new beds bringing capacity to 139 beds

2005
September 1
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial partners and community members took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for a twostory 40000 square foot medical office building and new north entrance located off of Harley Strickland Boulevard

2006
July 27
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations awarded Florida Hospital Fish Memorial with the Gold Seal of Approval indicating the hospital received full accreditation The designation meant that Florida Hospital Fish Memorial demonstrated compliance with national standards for patient safety and quality of care

August 8
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial was named among the 2006 Orlando Sentinels Top 100 Companies for Working Families

October 22
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial implemented iConnect a stateoftheart automated clinical information system to support the delivery of more effective and more efficient patient care at the bedside

2007
January 30
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial joined the Institute for Healthcare Improvements 5 Million Lives Campaign a national campaign to dramatically reduce incidents of medical harm in US hospitals The 5 Million Lives Campaign asks hospitals to improve the care they provide in order to protect patients from five million incidents of medical harm over a 24month period ending December 9 2008 It represents a continuation of the largest improvement effort undertaken in recent history by the health care industry

February 19
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial announced that a study of quality at the nations 4971 hospitals named the hospital as one of the top five percent in the nation and a recipient of the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence two years in a row 2006 2007 Florida Hospital Fish Memorial is one of 37 hospitals in Florida to receive the recognition from HealthGrades
