Carthage Area Hospital is a 78bed acute care hospital located in Jefferson County of northern New York State It is federally designated as a Sole Community Provider Therefore the facility serves as basically the only source of primary and acute healthcare delivery within the immediate communities of eastern Jefferson northern Lewis and southern St Lawrence Counties

The hospital governance and administrative leadership attempt to continually review and update our strategic vision to ensure modern healthcare technology and staff are available to enhance access and meet all primary health needs at and through local community resources

We realize we are a unique business as we are here to meet the healthcare needs of our community We therefore consider the hospital to be a healthcare and social ministry

History

Our Healing Heritage
Carthage Area Hospital CAH was established as a notforprofit 501 c 3 rural community hospital

in 1965 This 78bed acute care facility includes a 30 bed Skilled Nursing Unit and serves approximately 83000 residents living in Jefferson northern Lewis and southern St Lawrence Counties The Hospital is proud to serve both civilian and military personnel and their families at Fort Drum The 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum is one of two military bases within the United States that does not have its own military hospital We continue efforts to expand and improve needed healthcare services and technologies for our dedicated warriors in the 10th Mountain Division We value and appreciate these military families and do our most to assist them in becoming an integrated part of our community while using the services of our facility

In 1995 the Hospital completed a 6000 square foot expansionrenovation of its Emergency Department ED In Sept 2007 The Hospital completed a major expansion and renovation in September 2007 which included a 24000 square feet building expansion to accommodate a new birthing center surgical suites lobby and small administrative services area for medical records data processing and general accounting suites The Hospital serves the community in two capacities it is a Sole Community Hospital provider and it is the on of the largest employers within the community CAH employs nearly 500 with an annual payroll of over 22000000

The CAH Community Partners Primary Healthcare Network continues to improve healthcare access to residents within its primary and secondary service area through collaborating partnerships with local governments schools churches civic organizations and neighboring healthcare providers As a result of these partnerships we are now operating twenty three primaryspecialty article 28 clinics throughout the region This includes primary care clinics in Adams Carthage Harrisville Evans Mills Sackets Harbor and Cape Vincent Family Health Center Through these partnerships we are able to work in unity with various communities and improve basic healthcare access for the respective and individualized communities we serve CAH has been instrumental in developing partnerships with various schools to open School Based Health Clinics SBHC within the respective school buildings This past year we have added the LaFargeville Central School and EdwardsKnox Central Schools to our program Currently we have SBHCs at eight schools most of which have dental and mental health services

In March 2010 CAH completed Phase I of CAH Community Health Center located at 117 North Mechanic Street in Carthage New York The new 6000 square foot one story building houses the CAHs Womens Way to Wellness Center and temporarily the CAH Pediatric Center Phase II construction of the second Community Health Center Building is currently underway This building will house CAH Medical Center primary care and will permanently house CAH Pediatrics It will be complete in November of this year These two sites are constructed through federal and state grant funding totaling slightly over 2 million When fully developed we estimate over 24000 annual patient visits at the multispecialty center In addition to improving basic healthcare services for the surrounding communities this Center serves as a major economic stimulant for our downtown business district again providing an opportunity to serve as a business partner with our community

The Hospital is accredited by DNV Healthcare Inc and the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organization JCAHO and to date is the only Hospital to receive dual certification by both Hospital Accreditation Programs in Northern New York The hospital also has a 10 bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit which is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities CARF
