History

The Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital was founded in 1911 through a trust established by Bertha Lindau Cone as a memorial to her late husband Moses Herman Cone a local textile magnate Since opening its doors in 1953 its mission of community service remains the foundation of its mission A broad array of services is available to all members of the community it serves without regard to an individuals ability to pay

Today Moses Cone has grown from a single 51bed hospital to a fully integrated healthcare system comprising five hospitals and a multitude of outpatient services The System provides a full range of tertiary services to the people of Guilford Alamance Randolph and Rockingham counties Led by a 22member selfperpetuating Board of Trustees care is provided by more than 800 private physicians and dentists and a dedicated staff of more than 7000 healthcare professionals

The original hospital The Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital has grown to 529 beds and is a recognized leader in cardiology neuroscience trauma and rehabilitation

In 1988 the organization responded to the areas need for womens health care by forming The Womens Hospital of Greensboro following the acquisition of Greensboro Hospital from Humana Corp The facilitys conversion to The Womens Hospital was completed in 1990 The 130bed hospital offers obstetric and Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care services as well as medical and surgical services for women It was the first freestanding womens hospital in North Carolina

In 1990 the organizations Health Services division was created as a result of the growth and development of a range of nonacute healthcare services in which the operating corporation participates as the sole owner or a joint venture partner The Extended Care Center a 144bed nursing home the freestanding Moses Cone Surgery Center and the Greensboro Diagnostic Center a joint venture with the hospitals radiology group are just three of Health Services major entities

In 1997 Moses Cone Health System entered into a full asset merger with Wesley Long Community Hospital in order to more efficiently meet the communitys growing healthcare needs Wesley Long Community Hospital is a 220bed acutecare general hospital Wesley Long Community Hospital was established in 1917 as a 30bed facility and purchased in 1932 by 12 local physicians who became members of Wesley Longs Board of Directors At that time Wesley Long Community Hospital was incorporated under North Carolina State Law as a nonprofit hospital In 1943 it became a nonprofit community hospital corporation and in 1961 Wesley Long Community Hospital was moved to its current campus

In July 2001 Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville became part of Moses Cone Health System Annie Penn Hospital was established in 1930 It has 450 employees and 50 active members on its medical staff The hospital is licensed at 110 acute care beds and 42 nursing home beds and provides care for the people of Reidsville and the surrounding area

The System also operates The Wesley Long Nursing Center a 140bed longterm care facility with 120 skilled nursing beds and 20 beds designated for personal care

In addition to the above identified hospitalbased services Moses Cone Health System provides other services to the community in partnership with other organizations Home care and durable medical equipment in the home is provided by Advanced Home Care Inc a joint venture between the Moses Cone Health System and High Point Health Care Investment Co Care of the terminally ill and their families is provided through Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro a joint venture between Moses Cone Health System and numerous Greensboro residents who are individual members of Hospice
