History

Our History
In 1960 the founders of presentday Banner Thunderbird Medical Center opened a facility at Northern and 61st Avenue named Northwest Hospital

This hospital was the culmination of a decadelong struggle to build a community hospital to serve the health care needs of the Northwest Valleys 40000 residents

In 1983 the hospital then named Glendale Samaritan Hospital moved north to its current location at 55th Avenue and Thunderbird Road where a 150bed facility was opened At this time the Northwest Valley population had swelled to 340000 residents

The growing need for services has never stopped Today Banner Thunderbird serves a market of more than 1 million people To accommodate their needs we launched a 290 million expansion project in 2007 that increased the size of the hospital to 513 beds

Expanding to meet the needs of the community

The expansion project which was recently completed added a new 200bed patient tower new main entrance larger Emergency department cafeteria and dining room stateoftheart surgical suites a new heart and vascular center and more beds for pediatric patients

Despite the growth and change our dedicated employees volunteers and physicians still adhere to the core values that make health care a noble calling to treat each patient and each other with compassion dignity and respect

Its truly been a legacy of care and the story is far from over Stay with us as we live out that legacy and strive to meet not just the health care needs of the community but to exceed them one patient at a time
