For more than 70 years Annie Penn Hospital has served the people of Reidsville and the surrounding communities of Rockingham and Caswell counties Located in the Piedmont Triad just 20 miles north of Greensboro Annie Penn Hospital offers a broad range of medical and surgical services that are unique for a community of its size Advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures as well as access to almost every type of specialized healthcare are available Specialty care is also provided through the hospitals Surgery Center a rheumatology clinic Cancer Center Sleep Center and cardiology programs

Annie Penn Hospital is a notforprofit organization with 110 licensed acutecare beds Through its medical staff of more than 50 active physicians Annie Penn Hospital provides a number of specialties including orthopedic surgery gastroenterology gynecology urology ophthalmology general surgery podiatry nephrology otolaryngology and thoracic and general medicine

The Annie Penn Hospital Surgery Center combines advanced technology and expert surgeons and staff The center is located at the side of the hospital to make it as convenient for day surgery patients as possible

Annie Penn Hospital has a modern spacious emergency department This important part of the hospital was expanded and remodeled in 2008

At the Annie Penn Cancer Center oncologists and staff deliver expert care in a supportive environment that is close to home The Annie Penn Sleep Center brings relief to area residents suffering from common sleep disorders

Annie Penn Hospital offers high quality cardiology care as well as access to advanced treatment options through an affiliation with LeBauer HeartCare A Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is also offered to area heart patients to help them achieve the best possible health It includes exercise training education counseling and behavioral interventions


History

Annie Penn Hospital timeline

1930 Annie Penn Memorial Hospital opened its doors for the first time It had 31 beds

1932 The newly opened hospital closed due to financial difficulties brought on by the Depression

1933 The hospital reopened thanks to funds from the Duke Foundation and the community along with help and hard work from area residents and physicians

1942 A fourth floor was added bringing the total bed count to 68

1944 The Jefferson Penn Foundation was started to provide an internextern program This allowed studying physicians to rotate through the various departments and learn all phases of medicine

1946 The Fultz identical black female quadruplets were born which brought national attention

1950 The hospital was accredited by the American College of Surgeons now known as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

1952 The hospital completed the addition of the west wing adding 20 more beds an emergency room maternity ward nursery and a medical records department

1955 The first organizational meeting of the Womens Auxiliary was held Now called the Annie Penn Hospital Auxiliary this organization of men and women is still very supportive of the hospitals needs

1956 A lobby and twostory addition to the west wing were built The additional 18 beds brought the total bed count to 108

1961 A fourroom operating suite was completed

1964 The hospitals Board of Trustees supported a nursing program at Rockingham Community College which allows students to get their clinical training at Annie Penn Hospital

1967 The south wing was added bringing the total bed count to 152

1975 The emergency room began operating around the clock

1981 A new wing was completed to house 68 medicalsurgical private rooms and a 12room intensive care unit

1983 Renovations to the old wing to improve laboratory physical therapy and respiratory therapy services were completed

1984 The hospital established Home Health Care to provide care in patients homes

1985 The hospital affiliated with Duke University Medical Center to bring oncology care to Reidsville

1986 An extended care unit opened with 31 beds

1987 The Duke services were expanded to include neurology rheumatology and cardiology More extended care unit beds were added bringing the total to 42

1990 Annie Penn Hospital emerged as a progressive leader among community hospitals with the hiring of the first female president Susan Fitzgibbon in 1990 During the 1990s Annie Penn Hospital added numerous programs and services They include

The Woodmont Child Development Center which is licensed for children of employees and the community including 42 toddler 35 afterschool children and 10 infants
The Annie Penn Hospital Foundation to oversee fundraising and estate planning programs
A helicoptermobile services pad
A mobile lithotripsy unit
A mobile Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI unit
Cardiology services through an affiliation with LeBauer HealthCare in Greensboro
An outpatient center
The new fourth floor which includes the Birthing Center and an educational classroom

Unified Home Care a partnership between Annie Penn Hospital Morehead Memorial Hospital and the Rockingham County Health Department to provide home health services

2001 In July Annie Penn Hospital merged with Moses Cone Health System
