The Center incorporates the 651bed Albany Medical Center Hospital one of New Yorks largest teaching hospitals Albany Medical College one of the nations first private medical schools and the Albany Medical Center Foundation Inc one of the largest fundraising organizations in the region

As an academic health sciences center Albany Medical Center has a mission of providing excellence in medical education biomedical research and patient care
Albany Medical Center has a responsibility to
Educate medical students physicians biomedical students and other health care professionals in order to meet the future health care needs of the region and nation

Foster biomedical research that leads to scientific advances and the improvement of the health of the public and

History

Written by Greg McGarry Albany Medical Centers Vice President for Communications The History of the Formation of Albany Medical Center chronicles the events leading up to the formation of the Center in 1982

SECTION I
Traces the founding of Albany Medical College and Albany Hospital the predecessor to Albany Medical Center Hospital in 1839 and 1849 respectively and discusses their complementary and reinforcing missions and the fact that they remained separate organizations for nearly a century and a half
