History

The History
The New Victoria Hospital opened on its present site in May 1958 replacing the original Victoria Hospital which opened in 1898 and which was absorbed in 1948 into the newly formed National Health Service The original doctors and local residents who founded the new hospital believed passionately that there was still a need for an independent hospital in the area to exist outside the NHS and from that determination has grown the modern first class hospital which exists today

The hospital was operated until early 2007 by the original charity but was then acquired by a group of Irish investors who planned a major redevelopment of the hospital site These plans foundered in the wake of the banking crisis and it became necessary by 2010 to refinance the business The original charity which by then had been renamed The Victoria Foundation stepped up and reacquired the hospital in January 2011

Chief Executive Charles Hutton who has been in post for 30 years leads a highly skilled and professional team with many members of staff having given long service This is particularly welcomed by our patients who feel reassured when they see familiar faces
