Description

In 1948 when the National Health Service came into existence Dr Donald Towle was a singlehanded GP in Blackheath He lived in a large Victorian house called Lee Park Lodge which was situated at the top of Blackheath Village His practice was situated in an annex at the rear of the house accessed through a large red wooden door situated opposite the end of Blackheath Park Dr Towles mother and father were the wellknown Music Hall act called Old Mother Reilly

Dr Towle was joined in the practice by Dr Mabel Thompson in 1954 and then by Dr Brian Thompson in 1955 They worked together until 1963 when Dr Towle moved to Devon Dr Tim OCallaghan then joined the partnership until he moved with his family to StocktononTees in 1971 He was replaced by Dr Stanley Halpin

The Lee Road Surgery moved into its present premises at 20 Lee Road in 1971 when the lease on Lee Park Lodge expired This grand old house was demolished in the early 1970s and replaced by the Mormon Church

Dr Robert Lumb joined the practice in 1984 following Dr Halpins retirement Dr Brian Thompson sadly died in August 1987 at the age of 62 Dr Desmond Thompson became a partner in October 1987 followed by Dr Alan Thompson in October 1988

A major project to rebuild and enlarge the surgery premises took place in 19901991 providing more space and additional consulting rooms allowing the practice to expand further Sister Jean Thomas became the first Practice Nurse in March 1990

Dr Mabel Thompson retired in October 1992 and was replaced by Dr Jackie Urwin and the practice expanded further with the appointment of Dr Penny Milner in October 1993

We now have 5 partners with Dr Sandeep Kapur who has been working with the practice since September 2004 and also a GP Registrar There are now 3 practice nurses Anne Tully Gillian Branigan and Doreen Allen along with numerous nonmedical staff who all combine together to look after 9700 patients
