MIDDLESBROUGH has the highest rate of hospital admissions due to poisoning injuries in the country according to new data
The South West Public Health Observatory SWPHO has released the latest Injury Profiles for Local Authorities in England which puts Middlesbrough at the top of the league for poisoning injuries closely followed by Redcar and Cleveland in fourth
The figures show the rate of hospital admissions due to poisoning injury between 2010 and 2011 was 2415 per 100000 of the population in England
The Northeast average rate of admissions was much worse at 3865 per 100000 but Middlesbrough recorded the worst rate at 539 per 100000
Redcar and Cleveland recorded 4894 admissions per 100000
The poisoning admissions recorded include incidents which are unintentional intentional deliberate assault or of undetermined intent
They refer to a variety of substances including antidepressants illegal drugs medicinal drugs alcohol organic solvents carbon monoxide motor vehicle exhaust pesticides glues and adhesives paint and fertilisers
Tina Williams project manager at Bridges Family and Carers Support Services which helps those with addiction issues said she was not surprised by the figures She said more investment was needed in both treatment programmes for alcohol as well as drugs and jobs as unemployment and deprivation often go hand in hand with addiction and subsequent hospital admissions
She said Areas like ours do need some special help with more jobs and money to treat alcoholism as well as drug addiction
Middlesbrough is listed in the top five English local authorities in two other categories recorded in SWPHOs Injury Profiles It is second in the country for the rate of hospital admissions for alcohol attributable injuries 6162 per 100000 and fourth for the rate of children under 18 admitted to hospital due to injuries 2002 children under 18 per 10000
The England average for hospital admissions due to alcoholattributable injuries between 2010 and 2011 was 2944 per 100000 while the national average for under18s admitted due to injury in the same period was 1243 per 10000
