History

Was established in 1925 when it began modestly with 40 bedsThe spirit of the Founders was of service to the poor and needy and the participation by the community was so overwhelming that this hospital came to be acclaimed as a monument of organized philanthropy To maintain the large number of free and subsidized beds the Hospital heavily depended on public donations Yet it continuously grew expanded and modernized thanks to the philanthropic community which stood by it at all times

With increasing cost of maintenance of the services coupled with the cost of expert personnel to man the stateofart facilities and a fast advancing technology which demanded continuous modernization to fight obsolescence the expenditure was growing at faster rates year after year Naturally the cost of treatment per bed increased manifold over the years and the Hospitals determined bid to maintain its large number of free and subsidized beds resulted in significant addition to its costs An ambitious programmed of expansion including the construction of a Multistoried Tower was already on hand

The Hospital found itself going through a financial crisis The Managing Council held detailed deliberations on the various options and finally resolved to accept the offer received from the Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation DAF A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in December 1997 between the Hospital and DAF the latter committing to bring in funds to the extent of Rs4560 Crores over the following 35 years The Nominees of DAF were inducted on the governing bodies and steps began to be taken to improve the situation

During the past seven years since DAF began its participation in the management of this Hospital funds have been brought in to the tune of over Rs62 Crores for the revival and enhancement of facilities A further amount of Rs 870 Crores was given for undertaking medical research projects and improving the infrastructure for that purpose

Extensive refurbishment was undertaken on the existing buildings giving a new refreshing look to the Pediatric Ward the Maternity and Gynaec Wards all Operation Theatres the ICCU ICU the Dialysis Unit and several other areas The Casualty services are now housed in a much larger area with better facilities including a room for procedures and a few Day Care Beds An improved kitchen has replaced the old conventional kitchen Much to the convenience of patients and their relatives Pharmacy services are reorganized to facilitate supply of medicines etc directly to the patients round the clock The Nurses Lecture Hall has been converted into a Functional AuditoriumcumClass Rooms good enough to organize prestigious Medical Conferences

An Intermediate Care Unit IMCU has been established offering more professional care than what is feasible in the regular Ward for patients who need a little more clinical attention Later a High Dependency Unit HDU was commissioned adding a new dimension to our service to patients needing critical care The ICU the ICCU the IPCU and the NICU continue to be in demand

Upgradation of infrastructure in both diagnostics and patient management has been receiving top priority The 4Channel EMG an exclusive Endoscopy Unit to do away with its earlier dependence on the Operation Theatre facilities a stateofthe art Ophthalmology Unit a fullfledged Cardiac Cath Lab and CT Scan Centre Mammography equipment Ventillators with pediatric attachments separately for the Operation Theatres and the Cath Lab are some of the prestigious additions on our equipment front

The refurbishment of the premises to meet the expectations of the generation next modernization of infrastructure in most diagnostic and therapeutic facilities addition of well trained and experienced Consultants in good numbers to the existing strength in many Departments constant monitoring of the liaison with the Insurance Companies and Third Party Administrators and above all the conscious steps taken to continuously improve the quality of delivery systems have resulted in improved operational efficiency in respect of most services The Hospital has been witnessing consistently improved productivity in most departments during the past few years thanks to the restructuring of the staffing and services The performance today is reminiscent of its glorious past

The number of patients who received treatment at the Hospital as Indoor patients during last year 200405 was 10385 It is after a gap of eight years that the Hospital is witnessing a patient load of this size This has resulted in a Bed Occupancy level of 84 the highest in recent years and a clean 10 jump over the previous year At the Outdoor Department PT Clinic the Hospital rendered services to 45514 patients during the year maintaining an average annual growth rate of around 10 during the past three years
