The Vedanayagam Outpatient Block the nucleus of this hospital was built in 1986 Later in 1988 the free ward consisting of 50 beds was built and Sankaras Community Eye Care programme began on a small scale Free eye surgeries were performed on the economically challenged

This program grew quickly in popularity and in demand giving rise to a necessity for expansion Hence with the support of the public and philanthropic minded individuals and institutions the hospital grew from strength to strength to a capacity of 500 beds

This 500 bed hospital is supported by a strong team of qualified experienced eye surgeons and other paramedical and support staff

With the addition of an exclusive pediatric ward in 1990 Sankara Eye Centre took up Rainbow a preventive eye care program for children in 1992 In 1998 the Sankara Tulsi National Institute of Community Ophthalmology was established with the aim of training the required personnel to be surgeons Vandematharam Bharat Vision a program initiated to develop the much needed human resource for other states and countries was setup soon after By replicating the eye care service model of Sankara Eye Centre Coimbatore struck its roots here
