What is Cancer

Cancer is a group of disease characterized by out of control cell growth There are over 200 different types of diseases that can be called cancer They have one thing in common that in every case normal cells have gone wild amp lost their normal growth

Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lump or masses of tissue called tumors except in the case of leukemia

There are several major types of Cancers

Carcinomas form in the cells that cover the skin line of the mouth throat lungs amp organs sarcomas are found in the blood bone marrow amp the spleen

Lymphomas are found in the Lymphatic system

Causes of Cancer

Cancer can be caused by various factors in our environment These factors include a large number tobacco tobacco smoke asbestos fibers amp other occupational hazards Other causes are sunlight Injury or repeated irritation metal or plastic implants flaws in the body immune system genetic factor some scientist believe viruses also

Cancers 7 warning signs

Change in bowel or bladder habits
A sore that dose not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere
Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing

Treatment of Cancer

Cancer Treatment depends on the type of cancer the stage of cancer age health status amp additional personal characteristics

Surgery

Surgery is the oldest known treatment of cancer If a cancer has not metastasized it is possible to completely cure a patient by surgically removing cancer from the body Once the disease has spread it is nearly impossible to remove all of the cancer cells

Radiation

Radiation treatment also known as radiotherapy destroys cancer by focusing highenergy rays on the cancer cells Radiotherapy utilizes highenergy gamma rays that causes damage to the molecules that make up cancer cells amp leads them to commit suicide Radiotherapy is used as a standalone treatment to shrink a tumor or destroy cancer cells amp it is also used in combination with other cancer treatments

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy utilize chemicals that interfere with the cell division process damaging proteins or DNA so that cancer cells will commit suicide Cancer cells cannot recover from any chemical induced damage Chemotherapy treatment occurs in cycle so the body has time to heal between doses Chemotherapy can be combined with other treatment options

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy aims to get the bodys immune system to fight the tumor Immunotherapy can also be considered non specific if it improves cancer fighting abilities by stimulating entire immune system amp it can be considered targeted if the treatment specifically tells the immune system to destroy cancer cells Bone marrow transplantation cancer also is considered immunotherapy because the donors immune cell will often attack the tumor or cancer cells that are present in the host

Gene Therapy

The goal of gene therapy is to replace damaged genes with ones that work to address a root cause of cancer Gene therapy is a very young field

Hormone Therapy

Several cancers have been linked to some types of hormones most notably breast amp prostate cancer Hormone therapy is designed to alter hormone production in the body so that cancer cells stop growing or are killed completely

How Cancer can be prevented

Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors that is easiest to prevent For examples choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lower the risk of several types of cancer most notably lung throat mouth amp liver cancerSkin cancer can be prevented by staying in the shade using sunscreen protecting yourself with hat amp shirt when in the sun

Some cancer prevention is based on systematic screening in order to detect small irregularities or tumors as early as possible even if there are no clear symptoms present Breast self examination mammograms testicular self examination amp Pap smears are common methods for various cancers

History

It was nearly three decades ago that the dedicated Godman amp noted Freedom Fighter Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj left us due to the dreaded disease Cancer During that time there was no facility for cancer treatment at Maharashtra except Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai

The then chief Minister Shri Vasantraoji Naik was one of his follower Tukdoji Maharaj expressed his desire that there should be a Cancer Hospital at Nagpur for providing treatment of this dreaded disease to all people

His close disciples formed a Charitable Trust named Cancer Relief Society to give a shape to Maharajs last wish into a reality With determination the Society collected donations State Govt of Maharashtra has donated 5 7 acres of land on lease for construction of a Cancer Hospital The Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Cancer Hospital started on 10th March 1974 with a single cobalt therapy unit and slowly over the years it has developed into full fledged highly specialized cancer hospital with all amenties under one roof

Recognizing their wonderful endeavors the Government of India has given this hospital the status of one of the Regional Cancer Centre Hospital of India in 1999

This hospital is built up in a sprawling lush green area of 57 acres The beautiful area surroundings and view of the hospital gives a soothing effect in the mind of the patients

The hospital is now striving to reach the pinacle of quality cancer management per excellence with any international standards
