History

This Hospital was started in the year 1989 as a 10bedded hospital to provide primary health care to the students staff and their families of Karunya As the Institution grew up in leaps and bounds the surrounding villages also became modernized with stationary shops hotels medical shops hair saloons etc increasing the village population and the rural community people also started utilizing the services of the hospital

A fiveyear USAID project was undertaken from 19921997 which enabled Karunya to render free medical services to the tribal people catering to over 51 villages surrounding Karunya for a population of 60000 Through this project we were able to provide doortodoor free medical facilities since there was no other medical help due to the lack of transport poverty and ignorance By this service lots of prenatal maternal mortalities were minimized apart from deaths due to malnutrition and anemia

The necessity to improve the available services and at the same time to revive the free mobile clinics to cater to the basic needs of the downtrodden has given us the vision to make this existing rural hospital to a referral one
