Description

Holy Family Hospital Mumbai has served the healthcare needs of Mumbais vast suburbs since the early 1950s We are committed to quality care and adopt a humane approach that establishes a relationship with every patient in our care

Our mission also extends to the community at large Our community outreach programmes out patient services and patient education programmes fulfil this need However we also believe that by building a personal rapport with every patient we strengthen our bond with the community we serve

Administered by The Bandra Holy Family Hospital Society Holy Family Hospital Mumbai is a 232 bed public charitable trustrun hospital and a centre of medical excellence today Yes we have come a long way since our humble beginnings

Our hospital has its roots in a 10bed private nursing home that catered to suburban Bandra in 1942 Over the decades this nursing home was converted into a general hospital for the community first administered by the Medical Mission Sisters and then by the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate

With the passage of time innovations in medicine and a burgeoning population brought about an evolution that transformed the institution into a multispecialty hospital that has also nurtured a strong research and academic tradition

However we have never lost sight of our original mission to serve the needs of a multilayered community that once had little access to quality healthcare Just as illness is blind to social and economic considerations we believe that affordable healthcare is a basic right of everyone

Our reputation and accolades notwithstanding we always place special emphasis on the patient behind the disease Guided by a spiritual mission we believe that a patient centric approach is as important to healing as is state of the art diagnostic amp therapeutic intervention

It is with this unwavering commitment that our doctors nurses and other staff meet the complex medical needs of 15000 in patients and 75000 outpatients every year

Constantly raising the bar we achieved significant milestones in 2002 when we inaugurated the Holy Family Heart Institute and in 2010 with the Hybrid CathLab With its cutting edge cardiac catheterisation laboratory MRI CT Scan and other medical facilities the hospital is a pioneer in cardiac diagnostics treatment and research

Holy Family Hospital Mumbai also has a strong research and teaching culture Setting the tone for this fine tradition is The Bandra Holy Family Medical Research Society which was set up in 1987

While spearheading basic research clinical drug trials and engaging in Continuing Medical Education the Medical Research Centre contributes to the efficient delivery of clinical diagnostics treatment and patient care within the latest guidelines and evidence based medicine It also enhances the quality of teaching available to post graduate students at the hospital

To further its research and teaching objectives the hospital also runs institutions divisions and courses that include a post graduate degree course for DNB resident medical officers Continuing Medical Education programme for doctors Nursing Institute School of Medical Technology and Patient Education Programme

It is with this multi dimensional approach and unique blend of medicine and personalised care that we constantly strive to safeguard the health and well being of the diverse communities that we serve

History

Holy Family Hospital Mumbai evolved purely out of the need to serve the complex and growing needs of Mumbais suburbs What started as a private nursing home has since developed into a multi specialty hospital and medical research centre under the stewardship of two religious congregations

The hospitals humble beginnings date back to 1942 when Dr Austin Da Silva opened a 10 bed private nursing home called Silverene in suburban Bandra Over the next decade the healthcare needs of suburban Mumbai grew manifold and to fill the void for a professional hospital Silverene was handed over to the Medical Mission Sisters in 1953

The congregation expanded the nursing home to accommodate 22 beds and rechristened it as the Holy Family Hospital The congregation embraced its new mission with zeal and set a fine tradition in community healthcare with a special emphasis on maternity care The hospital thus grew from a local need based clinic to a modest institution that catered to the general medical needs of Mumbais extended suburbs

Over the next two and a half decades the demographics of Mumbais suburbs changed dramatically They became more complex and as the population grew so did healthcare requirements

Also at this juncture the Medical Mission Sisters preferred to focus on rural rather than urban healthcare It was time to take another leap of faith Thus along with a detailed survey of community health needs the Medical Mission Sisters passed the baton to the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate in 1978

Funds were raised both locally and abroad under the aegis of Dr Sr Maria Giovanna Alberoni affectionately called Mother Giovanna This opened a critical chapter in the institutions history marking the transition from a modest nursing home to a hospital that delivered state of the art diagnostics amp treatment emergency care preventive medicine and teaching and research initiatives

As the new dream took shape the foundation stone of a four storey building was laid in 1982 It was inaugurated on November 17 1985 as a 120 bed hospital

Mother Giovanna a doctor herself realised that efficient medical care as well as scientific evaluation were prerequisites to maintaining professional standards She therefore embraced the idea of a research centre and it was with great pride that she presided over the opening of this prestigious arm of the hospital in 1987

Projects undertaken by the Medical Research Centre extend from fertility awareness and natural family planning to the evaluation of hospital facilities such as the value of endoscopic surgery its pros and cons as well as studies on hospital post operative infection and prevalence of dementia in the community

Apart from the main divisions the hospital also added more and more specialties and patient facilities continuously expanding its reach and services to the community These include high quality endoscopy paediatrics cardiology respiratory medicine psychiatry neurology and neurosurgery With an eye on holistic medicine the hospital also opened a special homeopathic clinic with highly qualified doctors

Simultaneously infrastructure and medical technology were upgraded and the hospital building expanded to become the 232 bed institution it is today

During its journey the hospital has achieved several milestones One of these was the setting up of The Holy Family Heart Institute in 2002 a pioneer in cardiac diagnostics treatment and research

Rapidly going from strength to strength the hospital flagged off three more redletter days In April 2005 we inaugurated the Holy Family Institute of Nursing Education in August 2005 we admitted our first batch of post graduate DNB resident medical officers and in 2006 we inaugurated Holy Family School of Medical Technology

Today Holy Family Hospital Mumbai is a tribute to the field of medicine offering high quality and affordable care while never losing sight of our objective to serve the needs of the community regardless of caste creed or religion
