Hindu Rao Hospital is the largest multispecialty hospital run by MUNICIPAL CORPORATION OF DELHI catering to all sections of the society In addition to the free OPD and in patient services it also offers reasonably priced facilities of a Nursing Home that has 48 spacious rooms The strategic location of the hospital its size and the breadth of preventive promotive and curative services and the easy and costeffective accessibility to specialized services that it offers has succeeded in creating a large regular clientele for the hospital Though it primarily caters to a population of about 18 lacs largely from North Delhi its services are also utilized by patients from rural areas towns from neighbouring states and even from far off places like Assam Meghalaya The hospital also caters to the medical and health needs of a number of referred patients from not only the dispensaries and colony hospitals managed by MCD but also from nearby public hospitals managed by Delhi administration and many charitable and private institutions

This hospital is managed and controlled by MCD and is functioning under the supervision of Director Health ServicescumMunicipal Health Officer and the guidance of Additional Commissioner Health It offers a large and welldiversified menu of preventive promotive and curative services ranging from the blood examination provision of anti rabies vaccine to CAT scan Endoscopy Hemodialysis and YAG LASER photocoagulation The hospital is reasonably well equipped with modern diagnostic therapeutic and residential facilities It has a sanctioned bed strength of 980 which many a times epidemics natural calamities accidents etc needs to be supplemented with extra beds It provides Casualty and Emergency services round the clock The hospital has a well established network for referral to other hospitals Sushruta Trauma Center and has a pool of ambulances to transport the patients The hospital is recognized as a teaching institution for Diploma in Anesthesia and DNB in many specialties Presently the eight batch of DNB students is receiving their training in Hindu Rao Hospital

The present day modern Hindu Rao Hospital the largest hospital under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is situated on the green picturesque hilltop located in the green belt of Delhi which is a part and extension of the Arravali Mountain Range It has evolved to its present form from a 16 bedded small nursing home started in 1911 meant primarily for recuperation in a private house constructed by Sir Edward Cole Brook who was the British Resident In 1951 Delhi State Govt converted this Nursing Home into a General hospital offering basic preventive and curative OPD services with 127 beds for inpatients The Municipal Corporation of Delhi took over the hospital in 1958 and the Ministry of Health Govt of India designated this hospital as a referral hospital in 1963 Hindu Rao Hospital is a modern care modern multispecialty hospital catering to all sections of the society The strategic location of the hospital its size and the breadth of preventive promotive and curative services and the easy and costeffective accessibility to specialized services that it offers has succeeded in creating a large and regular clientele for the hospital The hospital also caters to the medical and health needs of a number of referred patients from the dispensaries and colony hospitals managed by MCD the nearby public hospitals managed by Delhi administration and many charitable and private institutions The hospital attempts to fulfill all criteria of a Health Promoting Hospital and has a healthy initiative of community mobilization in addition to numerous employee welfare schemes

Hindu Rao Hospital still has many archeologically important components that are well maintained The original building which now houses the Departments of ENT Ophthalmology and an Operation theatre is a protected building under the ASI act There are other buildings too including Peer Grah Sahiband a Baoli a water body Legend has it that a tunnel that started from the building led till the Yamuna river The doorway to the said tunnel has been boarded up since a few years and only the romantic legend remains
