History

Eighty Years of Eye Care in Gujarat

The Diva Eye institute has behind it a robust history of eighty years of eye care in the state of Gujarat

The First Generation

Dr Dipan Desais paternal grandfather Dr Jashbhai S Desai received his fellowship from the Vienna Eye Clinic in 1934 He was also Honorary Medical Officer at Anand Agriculture Institute and Vallabh Vidyanagar Education Institute

He established the Eye Hospital in Anand Kheda district in 1930 along with his close friend renowned ophthalmologist Dr Hiralal D Patel Professor at Nair Hospital Mumbai They conceived the idea as there were no facilities for eye care or surgery in the area The hospital initially had four beds A new eye hospital with twenty beds was built in 1934 and fifteen more beds added in 1942 Dr Patel visited the Eye Hospital Anand every fortnight from Mumbai religiously for forty years

The Eye Hospital Anand soon became well known for eye care In those days cataract surgery entailed ten days of complete bed rest and immobilization There are innumerable stories of grateful patients who were looked after compassionately often free of charge and fed by the good doctors wife from her own kitchen Dr JS Desai is still remembered with pride and affection by the older generation in Kheda district which he served with compassion and integrity

The Second Generation

His son Dr Ramesh J Desai married Dr Hiralal Patels daughter Dr Rohini Desai He received his DO London in 1964 while she did her fellowship in ophthalmology at the Jefferson Medical College He set up practice in Ahmedabad but was determined to continue the legacy of his father For eighteen years from 1964 to 1982 he made the to and fro train journey to Anand daily and ran the hospital set up by his father He achieved great respect as an ophthalmologist in Ahmedabad with clinics first at Khanpur and then Ellis Bridge He started the Ophthalmic Department at Rajasthan Hospital and was instrumental in purchasing the first YAG laser in the country even before Mumbai obtained one He now practices at the Diva Eye Institute and still shows untiring zeal and interest in the subject His wife Dr Rohini Desai works steadfastly alongside her husband

The Third Generation

The Diva Eye Institute was established by Dr Dipan Desai grandson of Dr J S Desai He received his ophthalmic postgraduate degree from the M amp J Institute of Ophthalmology Ahmedabad and proceeded abroad for his Fellowship to St Vincentius Krankenhaus Karlsruhe Germany in 1987 He then visited the best centres in the USA to observe absorb and round off his education

On his return to India he set up the Desai Eye Hospital amp Laser Centre The name was in tribute to his grandfather Dr Dipan Desai has always believed in offering the best available skills and facilities to his patients He acquired one of the first phako machines and pioneered phako emulsification surgery in the country in 1988 He was also the first to acquire a combination YAG Argon Laser in the country He has made major contributions by way of surgical innovations instrument design and academics He has held several academic posts at national level and organized many workshops and conferences He travels all over the country and abroad to teach demonstrate live surgery and update knowledge and skills
