History

History of Whiteley Clinic
Consultant vascular surgeon Mr Mark Whiteley founded The Whiteley Clinic in July 2001

Mark Whiteley qualified at St Bartholomews Hospital London in 1986 and trained as a surgeon in the Southwest and South of England Specialising in vascular surgery in 1992 he spent two years doing research into vascular disease with Professor Horrocks in Bath where he was awarded his MS Master of Surgery With a love of innovation and improving treatments for patients he continued actively researching in his clinical career being appointed a lecturer in surgery at Oxford University in 1995

In 1998 Mark Whiteley was appointed as a consultant vascular surgeon in Guildford Having become very interested in varicose veins and their link with leg ulcers and other complications he started an active research programme into venous disease On the 12th of March 1999 he performed the first minimally invasive or quotkeyhole operationquot for varicose veins in the UK using only a keyhole to treat the whole of the Great Saphonous Vein which up until that point had been treated by cutting in the groin and stripping out the vein

Initially this innovation was largely ignored in the UK Vascular technologist Judy Holdstock joined Mark Whiteley and together they realised the potential of this form of treatment Mark Whiteley and Judy Holdstock started gaining an international reputation for their work and were asked to speak widely around the world and were approached by many companies to assess innovative techniques

By 2000 they had invented a new technique called TRLOP to treat perforating veins using a keyhole technique and had improved their keyhole surgery techniques further Interest in these techniques started to increase as the results proved to be so good spawning a cascade of new treatments for varicose veins using RadioFrequency EndoVenous Laser Foam Sclerotherapy and other techniques such as coil embolisation

Being at the forefront of all of these innovations and having an active research and teaching programme Mark Whiteley moved into new premises in Guildford in July 2001 building the first Whiteley Clinic Joined by consultant vascular surgeon Mr Barrie Price and vascular technologist Charmaine Harrison the team has continued to expand and improve treatments over the last decade The Whiteley Clinic continues to actively research new techniques teaching the new generation of surgeons vascular technologists and nurses in the purposebuilt lecture unit which has a live link to theatre The Clinical Exchange and is dedicated to bringing the best treatments to all of their patients at the most costeffective prices to make them affordable for those with venous disease

Because of the highly specialised nature of The Whiteley Clinic it is a tertiary or specialist referral centre for complicated vein patients where they have had failed treatment elsewhere Of course it is much easier to achieve excellent results in those patients who have not had previous procedures but using its expertise The Clinic can usually get the same outcomes in those complicated patients with scars from previous surgery and recurrent vein problems
