History

The Sunset Lodge location952 Arm Street in Esquimalthas been occumpied by The Salvation Army since 1950 The current estate described by the Times Colonist in 1971 as a handsome building was purchased for the establishment of a shelter for senior women The building consisted of three stories and an attic five spacious bedrooms each with its own dressingroom and bathroom two dining rooms a drawing room conservatory an extensive kitchen with several pantries plus a downstairs ballroom which included a large stone fireplace and a small stage


The building was demolished in 1978 to make room for the construction of a 108bed Extended Care facility which was opened in 1979 Sunset Lodge was classified as an Intermediate Care facility A threestorey Dining Tower was officially opened in April 1998


The Salvation Army officially announced that the mandate of Sunset Lodge was changing and transitioning from an intermediate care facility to a complex care facility in June 2003 The change to a complex care facility added additional services such as care for residents with extended care needs and services for residents with moderate to severe dementia
