Early History of Squamish Hospice

The Squamish Hospice Society began with a public meeting in the Squamish United Church on Oct 29th1986 and a call for volunteers interested in Hospice and its work

Mary Ellen De Grace spoke at that first and subsequent meetings lending her experience and expertise to a community effort aimed at providing coordinated support for dying people and their familiesThe group was spearheaded by Rev Chris Burnett and Sherri Ganderton a Licensed Practical Nurse at Squamish General Hospital This vigorous and active group of volunteers served this community well for many years amp in Feb 1991 Squamish Hospice became an Incorporated Society Volunteer attrition and a variable need for Hospice volunteers led to the disbanding of the Society in Dec2003

In 2006 a vital and growing Palliative Care Program in the Sea to Sky Corridor once again sought the support of Hospice Volunteers
