History

Weve come a long way For more than a century Bluewater Health and its predecessor hospitals have been caring for the residents of SarniaLambton Our organization brings together the excellence of three hospital facilities that have long proud traditions in our community

Sarnia General Hospital

1890
A committee was appointed at a public meeting in the town hall to sell subscriptions to raise money for Sarnias first hospital

1896
Sarnia General Hospital was officially opened by Ontarios Lieutenant Governor With a 40bed capacity it opened with just 26 due to a shortage of money There were 7 employees a superintendent head nurse 2 nurses in training janitor and cook

1963
As demand grew an additional wing was built The third floor became home to the communitys first psychiatric unit The hospitals capacity rose to 332 beds plus 33 bassinets The wing was designed to hold 4 more floors a 500bed hospital was foreseen

1976
Service restructuring in Sarnia began as Sarnia General Hospital took sole responsibility for pediatric services while St Josephs Health Centre became responsible for Obstetrics

1984
Sarnia General Hospital became home to the communitys Chemotherapy Clinic in collaboration with the London Regional Cancer Centre

1985
The first Sarniabased CT scanner was purchased

1992
A Mammography Unit was opened in memory of breast cancer victim Pam Kohlmeier whose family helped make the unit possible along with 4 million raised through the Growing Expectations fundraising campaign

1998
St Josephs Health Centre joined in partnership with Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital and Sarnia General Hospital signified by the signing of the Strategic Alliance Agreement and called themselves Lambton Hospitals Group

2002
In October the Sarnia General Hospital Board of Directors unanimously passed a motion in support of one corporation to oversee the three hospitals in SarniaLambton

2003
On April 1 Sarnia General Hospital Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital and St Josephs Health Centre amalgamated to form a new corporation to oversee the three hospital facilities in SarniaLambton On December 16 the corporation was instituted under a new name called Bluewater Health Sarnia General Hospital was called Bluewater Health Mitton Site
