History

SJL History
Dr HV Pennington founded the hospital in 1926 giving London the most modern hospital in Southeastern Kentucky It was the only facility between Lexington Kentucky and Knoxville Tennessee to be located in a building specifically to house a hospital

In 1946 Pennington General Hospital was purchased by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth a religious community in Nazareth Kentucky The facility was given a new name Marymount Our Lady of the Mountain Planning for a new hospital began in the 1960s and the new facility opened in 1971 A 78 million construction and expansion of the hospital was completed in 1986 with the addition of a new patient tower In 1993 a renovation expansion project was completed that added more than 29000 square feet of additional space to the existing facility Since that time millions of dollars have been spent to expand our emergency department build additional catheterization labs and completely renovate our nursery and obstetric department

For more than fifty years the Sisters of Charity owned and operated Marymount until it was realized that the changing health care environment would require greater resources to develop programs structures and services in the next century For these reasons Marymount was consolidated with other Catholic health care facilities into Catholic Health Initiatives CHI in September 1998 Today CHI is a national nonprofit health corporation based in Denver Colorado The CHI system includes 72 hospitals 42 longterm care assisted and independent living and residential facilities and two communitybased health organizations located in 19 states Together our facilities provided almost 480 million in community benefit in the 2007 fiscal year including services for the poor free clinics education and research With approximately 65000 employees and annual revenues of 77 billion Catholic Health Initiatives ranks as the second largest Catholic health system in the United States

In 2008 Marymount Medical Center underwent yet another change CHI hospitals in Bardstown Berea Lexington London Martin and Mt Sterling Kentucky merged to create the Saint Joseph Health System The ability to apply lessons learned from each of our facilities will enhance the quality of care we provide across our new system By honoring the people and accomplishments of our past Saint Joseph London will build an even stronger ministry that continues the legacy the Sisters passed on to us

Not all ICUs need a specialist at night study

The results published in the New England Journal of Medicine counter an argument from some in the medical community that ICUs need roundtheclock intensivists doctors who specialize in critical care quotOur knee jerk reaction is to try to put intensivists in every ICU at all hours of the day and that reaction is likely a misstep because it overs...
